A few changes in the forwards from what we faced last time, I believe one of the Cornish posters said 3 changes with a positional to boot. Backs were entirely different.
Considering last week we put out a very strong side against an entirely youthful Hartpury and struggled, this is a good result and a step in the right direction.
Certainly my most enjoyable match as a spectator this season. Nice to see us open up a little bit with a couple of long range tries. Particularly impressed with steele, Curtis-harris, MNG and matt Williams off the bench
It was a great match to watch. Our play generally looked much more precise and I thought the youngsters in our team did themselves proud, albeit against a somewhat weakened opposition. I also thought the new trial tackle laws contributed to the game - it felt a bit more like the game I played in my youth! There were still a few thumping tackles but we didn't have the relentless smashing that has become so prevalent in recent years. It was unfortunate that Jake Schatz's low tackle on a Pirates player sent him flying head first over Jake's shoulder resulting in a yellow card for Jake. It was also noticeable that the Pirates players in particular seemed to wriggle and roll forward a good few yards when they were brought down before they presented the ball for recycling. These may be some things for coaches and referees to think about as players get used to the new rules.
jimbo800 Do we get highlights of the cup games or is it just league games?
Highlights were posted for the Hartpury game, so I'd imagine these will get posted at some point. Could be they'll upload them tomorrow as it was a Sunday game.
Jimbo - he was getting a good head of steam last season in the ECC matches, but then had a nasty injury and yesterday was I think his first game back.
He played 7 (although I think he inter-changed a lot with Northcote-Green who played 6) and he had a solid all round game.
Towards the end he made a barnstorming run at the end of which he literally tried to run through the Pirates player but seemed to come off second best, as he went down for a couple of mins and then gingerly left the field...! I don't think he was badly hurt though.
ISC has been pretty unlucky. Seems to pick up one bad injury a season, which has obviously impacted his development (did his hamstring badly in his first senior academy season iirc). Hopefully he gets a real opportunity this season.
Curtis-harris had a good game I thought. Always busy and a lovely pass to set Northcote green away in the first half as well as a nice break in the second half
Great to see our younger players stepping up - and, crucially, the bench making an impact. The backs had more to do than in recent games as well. Shame to see Fowlie limping off.
Pirates were particularly ferocious at the breakdown and ran an aggressive rush defence (blatantly offside at times to my eyes but not, crucially, to Sir's). They were shaky in the setpiece though.
