For the money being rumoured, we could get a very good player for less. Sean o brien is costing less than Mafi was rumoured to be getting.

Mafi would have been useful as he covers 4,5,6 and if needed 8. However I think we should be fine on that front if we kept Tuisue. I think the priorities would be securing Coleman's signature (plus another top quality lock to partner him) and two more first choice front rowers to go with Dell

I'd be more than happy with Hoskins at TH still. Not a priority position for front line recruitment imo.

Most important signing for me would actually be a decent Backs/Attack/skills or whatever they are calling it these days coach. Think we were in for Rory Teague, but that didn't work out. Would be shocked if we didn't get one in before the start of the season.

Mafi is a top drawer player, one of the best at the French champions. Not seen enough from Tuisue but would be surprised if he can get to the same level. Fingers crossed though. Think Mafiís versatility would have been a real asset for us so fingers crossed we have a couple of other back five forwards in the pipeline.

Hoskins has been one of our best players over the last few years and he'd definitely be pushing to start from our current players. I'd just be more comfortable in the Premiership if we had another capable tighthead specialist given Saulo hasn't impressed and Cilliers and Chawatama have (in my experience) performed better this season at loosehead (often alongside Hoskins ironically).

Getting an attack coach is definitely key especially given the quality players we are signing. I was focusing on player signings but we do need to get someone good in to organise how we attack.

Agree Mafi is probably the better player at this point and Tuisue is quite raw, but he's probably good enough currently to do a decent job and may prove to be a high quality player with a little work. A back row of Tuisue, O'Brien and Ioane looks like it could do some damage.

With the mafi deal falling through I think that leaves 3 more spaces available if Mr Facer was telling the truth regarding the 10 new signings (and assuming the likes of coleman and jackson have signed )
Personally want another quality lock, another back row and then not too sure.

Coleman sounds as though thereís work to do on the deal. Mafi is a shame if thatís correct as a back row of Mafi SOB and TJ would be a joy to watch

I wish that we were 15 points clear with three games left before a lot of this conversation was happening.

I still worry (in my nature) about injuries. A back row of Tissue, O'Brien and TJ looks good on paper. Two of them look prone to long lay offs (how many games has TJ started in the championship this year?) and the other is untested. The Premiership is relentless and rugby gets more brutal every year.

I think Rogerson can do a job at Premiership level if he has other players to share the carrying burden with. He has been very good for us this season and certainly done more than Tuisue.

Agree. You have to put a certain amount of faith in players that have stood out this year. There's no reason in my mind why Rogerson couldn't be given first crack at the 8 jersey next year. Would rather see SOB at 7. Have a similar view on Hoskins.

Our performance in the first six games will probably influence whether we are relegation fodder or middle of the table. That was the case in our two previous relegation seasons in the Premiership. This will be a tough ask.

It's definitely a factor and the more players available in pre season the better, as far as the first run of games goes (obligatory assuming we go up caveat)

Thankfully the GP season only starts on the 20 October, which is RWC quarter final weekend. Realistically even players in teams going out in the group stages aren't going to be available for a while though. Anyone that we sign from Super Rugby not involved in the RWC should be good to go though having had an opportunity for a break after SR and a chance to get bedded in properly prior to 20 Oct.

Looking at the likely situations of the signings and rumoured signings:

SOB - Won't see until December
Phipps - Would be surprised if he wasn't in the Wallabies squad, so another late arrival
Rona - Good chance he'll not go to the RWC and be available for the start of the GP
Coleman - Likely to go to the RWC and arrive late
Naholo - There's a chance he won't go to the RWC. Lot's of competition for AB back three places, so could go either way.
Jackson - Full pre season
Goodrick-Clarke - Will add him as this signing seems pretty likely. Full pre season

As an aside, I see the Waratahs are playing Rona on the wing tomorrow after he spent most of last season at 13.

Goodrick-Clarke starts at loosehead tonight for Richmond on sky sports for anyone interested. He got rave reviews on another thread, powerful scrummager and good in the loose plus I think he covers both sides of the scrum

We should also be getting a few players back from long term injury (assuming they will still be here next year).

Coman
Bell
Danny H-A
Parton

So with the signings to arrive for pre-season (Rona/Jackson/Naholo) should have a pretty competitive squad for that first block of games. Just depends on how far the Prem game has moved on and where other teams have strengthened.

Very interesting article on RugbyPass in regards to New Zealand players not knowing the environment they are signing up when they take the bumper pay deals. This is in the wake of Savea getting crucified by the Toulon owner. They named a load of players who are all leaving at the end of the season, including Nahalo. Further down the article when they talked about players knowing nothing about the clubs they are moving to, they ask ďdoes Nahalo know that the club he has signed for, London Irish arenít even in the premiership at the moment and are likely to struggle once they do get promotedĒ. This journalist seems to be of the opinion that he is definitely coming to us. Itís a good article to read if you get the chance.

Thanks for the note - I'll give it a look.

You'd have to hope that he is aware of the position of the club, the challenges we will face if promoted and the potential even that we won't be. The Sean o'Brien article from the other thread spoke of Declans good man management and the culture/environment he is building which attracted him to the club. This would be at odds with signing players who don't understand the club.

But then perhaps we were so happy he was coming we thought the less questions asked the better...

Thatís the excuse Coventry made when he failed to make an impact with us. It beggars belief that professional players with professional agents canít take the time to do even the most basic research about the teams/leagues theyíre joining.

Or you could take the view that the NZ press are doing their bit to try and put their best players off from leaving to Europe with scaremongering. I imagine Savea will now be used regularly as a ďcautionary taleĒ about the perils of leaving the safety of NZ.

Reading between the lines, the journo (presumably a New Zealander, is actually concerned about the talent drain. Having potential or past internationals leaving in their 20s and not settling in a different culture isn't news.

What is becoming more apparent is that the CDC and French Top 14 owners are luring talent from NZ more than ever. It's really no different to the continual pilfering by New Zealand from Fiji, Tonga, Samoa etc

I donít think NZ take as many players from other countries as we like to think but I do think theyíre starting to worry about players leaving for Europe. At the back of the world season idea is that the NZRU ad well as Australia and SA make more money to retain their players.

None of these guys move across the world without speaking to the many kiwis and players from their home teams already in the Premiership and Championship. Any kiwi or Pacific Islander coming here could ask any number of players and Iím sure they do.

At the back of it is a lot of money - SOB wouldnít come here regardless of DK and Les without a good whack to back up the vision.

I agree with Greenboots above I would love to see Williams back in an Irish shirt. But I recon if Newcastle go down there will be a lot of competition to sign him as his name is a lot more trendy to be talked about then when he played for us.

Pure speculation no information or inside scope but I was think if Manu signs for Racing maybe leicester will try and get Williams to sign for them. As a long term replacement at centre. Would prefer him with us but can't see him playing the Championship he's too good and has real England ambitions or any of the other home nations he qualifies for. I wouldn't rule out him changing league and joining the Pro14.

Seems to have been well regarded at Newcastle. He was in good form at the start then got broken again which, along with a few other key injuries, has seen them go from being close to winning key games to being close to cut adrift.

I'd consider having him back but I think we've got a decent squad lined up for next year and we may not have the money/space for him. He's also fighting Hepetema and Stephenson for a similar role and I'm not sure if he would be the first choice of those.

More interesting is that Jackson stated in a March interview that he is still talking to as many as four clubs, one of them being Irish. He hasnít come to a decision yet about where he will go.

There are quite a few players that I would like to see judged at a higher level. We are lauding Keatley (who has been very good) but we are not seeing these players in the Premiership cauldron, scrapping for survival. Personally, I would keep Keatley if possible, he has been great. Jackson has never played in the Premiership, it will be a big scrap next season.

Look at this years relegation battle, Falcons, Worcester, Tigers, the fly halfs are Toby Flood, Duncan Wier and George Ford, all top international players. Lots of our new players who came to us this year that everyone raves about will have to show huge improvement if we are to stay up. Big difference between the Championship and the Premiership

Neither has Keatley...

Find it odd that people are questioning pedigree of Jackson and Keatley. Sure, they haven't played in the Premiership, but I'd say international tours and various Heineken Cup campaigns (Jackson in SA, and I know Keatley was starting 10 in the semis a few years ago, for instance) are handy enough qualifications.

Botha and Van Zyl hadn't played in the Premiership either. They seemed to do okay. There are many examples of current top Prem players who hadn't either. Looking further back for us, think Mapasua, Tagicakibau, Hewat etc. Specific Premiership experience isn't a good blanket metric to go by.

Anywho, any more news on the engine room? Specifically Mafi and Coleman?

I'm assuming things will stay quiet until, and if, promotion is confirmed?

Coleman sounds like a done deal and assume we are just waiting to announce it. There was talk that the Mafi deal was off though. Loose rumours of Ruan Botha the Sharks second row coming in.

Neil Francis does a hatchet job on SOB in Irish independent.

Jackson or Keatley would be fine as would Myler. Keatley and Myler have had the benefit of playing with the team but Jackson is younger and hopefully with a point to prove. Shame to see Perpignan struggling.

I thought Symons was excellent when he came to us so Prem experience not the issue- time at the coal face in a team fighting week in week out would be a useful bit of experience

Am a little impatient that not had any news on new players or players signing new contracts. Guess impatient as excited for the future.

Yeah, if we'd opened up a better lead we probably would have seen a few more announcements by now (inc re-signings). As it is, anything like that would just be a distraction. Just need to get the job done on the pitch first.

Yeah sensible option is secure promotion then announce. Hopefully Jersey can assist but confident that the squad can get the job done no matter what other teams do.

We can, thankfully, put the rumour of Priestland joining us to bed.

After Bath scoured the globe for a world class 10, they've discovered Priestland was let go by his previous team and have snapped him up. The shambles that is Bath's recruitment of a decent 10 has brought me a lot of amusement.

Bath seem to find it difficult to look passed us as a recruitment target, it is no coincidence that we have never had a world class 10, therefore neither do Barf.

I don't think Neil Francis is taken particularly seriously, is he?

1. Francis was a joke when he played for LI and is still considered a joke by rugby supporters in Ireland.

2. Paddy Jackson to be highest paid player at club next season.

3. Adam Coleman outstanding for Rebels this am.

4. Nick Phipps passing looked v ponderous for Waratahs compared to Ben Meehan lately.

Thoughts?

Meehan over Phipps any day. Coleman is excellent but can be temperamental and easy to wind up. Jackson should be an excellent signing.

Lets get the promotion sorted first though.

Hard to disagree with paddymís post. Not sure Paddy J should be the best paid player but if thatís what it takes then fair enough. He needs to deliver if thatís the case.

Coleman will be great for us.

If we stay up, itíll be largely because of a very strong 10/kicker performance. If we donít heíll leave on the relegation clause. If we stay up then his wages will be more than covered by the increased income.

I think most important thing is that we don't move into Brentford season after next playing Championship rugby. Not to disrespect the league or anything but reasons for staying up should be obvious.

Yes, if Ealing lose and we win we will be promoted. I suppose the announcements are dependent on that.

Job done so the confirmed signings should restart this week before STs are announced, who 1st Naholo?

1) Curtis Rona (signed)
2) Nicks Phipps (signed)
3) Alan Dell (signed)
4) Sean OíBrien (signed)
5) Paddy Jackson (strong rumour, club still to announce)
6) Waisaki Naholo (very strong rumour, club still to announce)
7) Steve Mafi (rumour)
8) Adam Coleman (rumour)
9) Joe Hayes (rumour)
10) Ryan Botha (rumour)

Plus:
11) Will Goodrick-Clark (rumour)
12) Giovanni Licata (weak rumour)
13) Ian Keatley (weak rumour)

Stick Jamie Gibson in the weak rumour camp.

Someone mentioned they'd heard he'd signed a few months ago.

Spoke with mr facer after game yesterday!!! No signings will be announced till last game/end of season.... reason being he wants silverware ... so no distractions till the business is done!

What he did say is..... we have another tier 1 prop coming in and a lock.... all the rumours are good but one has pulled out last minute... but itís not mafi or Coleman ....the last 2 of the 10 are still a huge mystery

Which would imply it's probably Jackson or Naholo who has pulled out? Interesting.

Or 1 of the last unnamed 2??? Think Jackson is done personally ... otherwise may have been more talk of buying keatley out of contract!....... like everyone, Iím guessing on these bits other than the more solid stuff inner staff have told me

Daily Mail reported Jackson and Nahalo as signed. Still canít help wonder what Williams will do if falcons are relegated. Canít imagine thereís a relegation clause in his deal. Not that Iím chomping at the bit to get him back but two relegations in two years, hard to take. I donít think heíll be allowed to leave Falcons, wouldnít look good on his part either. Jumping ship every time things go wrong.

Completely agree, I think heís a very smart operator and absolute grafter. His work was almost too unnoticed, thought heíd get some more England training squad invites.

Just watched Rebels v Waratahs, if the rumours are true that we are signing Adam Coleman, think heíll be a real catch great line out work and pretty useful in the loose. The sort of player weíll need next season in the Premiership.

According to Fissler in TRP (so take it with a very large pinch of salt) Williams could return to us by if Falcons go down
