JK statement...
Jus-Quin-Time 01 November, 2017 09:25
In todays statement JK said:

"I’m building a positive environment and culture at Harlequins, on and off the field, which I believe will ultimately allow us to challenge for honours.”

When I read this my immediate thought was Why? Why does he need to build anything? I would have thought that a club with such a long history would have a well established culture with all the requisite policies, practices and procedures needed to provide the framework for players to perform. Furthermore with so many of the senior players having come through the Quins Academy the culture would already be established.

If he perceives the need to 'build a positive environment' (whatever that actually means) the obvious deduction is that the team suffers from a negative environment. That's a pretty damning admission from someone who has been a senior coach at the club for so long. Clearly it has happened/been happening on his watch.

JK is not the most erudite of DoRs but in the context of the situation I would have thought he would have chosen his words with a little more care. I could understand "improving the environment, building morale or changing the culture" all of which are perfectly valid.

Perhaps I am reading too much into this?

If I remember correctly there were rumours / reports of the atmosphere under CoS being somewhat divisive. If true, maybe he's still trying to build things up after that era? You've also got to think that with all the England boys plus Viss plus Jamie there's probably a fiar bit of ego to manage there - as you'd expect in any sports team containing so many internationals. Maybe it was also a case of trying to find a path through the excess of chiefs and lack of indians....

I was disappointed to read the negative way he phrased this: "... which I believe will ultimately allow us to challenge for honours.” So, no expectation of anything this season and next then ...? "Ultimately" sounds like a long way away.

It seems to me that he's stacking up excuses (injuries, only just started in the role, not 'my squad' — really? still? — needed to change the culture, etc. ...).

He's been in charge 18 months — how long does it take to build a positive environment and culture?

My reading of that was that he meant we're happy to take the short-term loss of a player like Yarde if in the longer run it benefits the culture of the side.

Put it on the other thread before I saw this one, but I'm not so fond of his use of "I" rather than "we" in this context. It feels like it betrays a bit of personal insecurity. Can't see much wrong with the actual substance though.

Reading too much into it I think.

'I'm building' can equally be interpreted as him saying 'I'm continuing to build' meaning that he isn't resting on his laurels and won't let players disrupt that team spirit.

I don't think JK is the right man for the job at all, but pouring over every word he says to look for something to criticise I think ignores some of the bigger issues.

Nope you're reading it right.

He said that he had to bring in discipline and that everyone signed up to be part of this system (see article in the Times on the other post)

Yarde wouldn't do what he was told. He's gone. So Kingston is making a point.

I was told by someone at the club that under CoS the players had total power because he'd given the England lot so much decision making - hence the shambles that we turned into when they were called up.

Can't be long before we're finding ways to blame JK for it being cold in winter and the Brexit vote

I blame JK for the decision to abandon the Gold Standard, The Great Depression and my failure to win more than £2.70 on the Euro Lottery.

But not the decision to hold a referendum on Brexit?

It would seem that whatever JK says or does he can only get it wrong in some peoples eyes, even occasional praise is often tempered with a "but".

Eddie Jones took over a team far more damaged than the one JK inherited and created a positive environment in less than a month.JK 18 months and counting. You hear nothing from the players about culture change in the way you hear about the environment at Sarries eg.More jam tomorrow

Exactly.

And don’t tell me Eddie Jones is unique or that we could never have hired someone like him. A couple of years ago the Stormers hired someone just like him. (OK he didn’t stay, but at least they tried.)

Eddie Jones took over a team that went from consistently winning 4/5 in the 6N to getting butchered at the world cup thanks to a dreadful S&C regime prior to the tournament. Jones hasn't exactly had to get the broom out, and some changes have been forced on him (he tried Burrell, he tried Farrell at 10, Alex Goode at any time, and quickly ditched those ideas) while other players have been available that weren't options for Lancaster (Sinckler, Te'o, Itoje). Bringing Hartley back was a good change in hindsight though obviously!

I think the main point is Eddie always had the players to do something with and they had already proven they were good but just needed to kick on a bit. JK felt he didn't have the players and is working towards changing that, but we've had injuries to all our signings, and additionally the side was in decline for some time. Last season he got us to our highest league finish for a while but everyone likes to believe there was no improvement.

Do I think JK is as good as Eddie Jones? Nah. Do I think another head coach might have done a better job? Sure, why not. Do I think Eddie would've had such a great record with England if he'd lost Farrell, Robshaw, Billy V, Mako, and Itoje for long periods? No chance smiling smiley

Jones has the pick of players from a huge pool. He doesn't have to worry about whether a player is free to be approached, he doesn't worry about the length of a player's contract, and he isn't held back by the salary cap. Jones' job is nothing like JK's job. It sounds quite like McCall's job though... smiling smiley

Eddies squad are all ambitious skilful players JK has a mix of young ambitious but still learning plus a proportion of journey men, players on the way down, who it maybe difficult to motivate.

The atmosphere in national squads must be different to the day to day “grind” of club rugby.

Eddie seems to be a prickly character who is able to understand what motivates, challenges and keeps interested his players as individuals.
