Graham Rowntree has left the club
The Prof 14 June, 2018 12:43
Harlequins has announced that Graham Rowntree has chosen to leave the Club for personal reasons.

Rowntree has been forwards coach at Harlequins for the past two seasons and he has been a very prominent and popular figure in the rugby department.

Harlequins would like to thank Graham for his great contribution and absolute commitment during his time at the Club.

The Club is incredibly grateful to Graham for all that he has given Harlequins and wishes him well for the future.

Could be the start of a few departures although surprised Graham has gone.

I wonder if he got a payoff for his contract extension?

Tough one to judge from the outside. Reputation suggests that GR would not be the first out the door after JK, and yet you'd have to say that our LO and scrum have not thrived even if you factor out the general malaise around the team and coaches.

As above, could just be that given the choice of a payout or staying on, he'd rather take his chances elsewhere.

But I think we all really want to know if the established Head Coach and unproven Defense coach who have jointly masterminded the worst defense in the Prem be shown out next?!

Well, as i said before, since we're paying them anyway, if Gustard can usefully use them for anything we might as well do so.

"Personal reasons" could be anything from family circumstances, to him and Gustard not getting on, to just polite wording for sacked. Not sure we'll ever get any detail.

Shame with how it's turned out though as, putting RWC 2015 to one side, his international record is actually good.

It will be no loss on the coaching side. We have a load of international players yet our scrum and line out was pathetic last season

Might be better to get some fresh ideas

It would be very very unusual to say personal reasons if it was simply him not being wanted by Gustard.

Shame it didn't work out. Was really excityed by his signing, but sadly it can't be classed as a success, though that has to be qualified by the general malaise. Ironically JK had considerably more success in that role.

Anyway, I wish him all the best. His departure was rumoured, and I assumed it was a pay off / mutual agreement, but personal reasons suggests maybe not. Who knows, doesn;t really matter.

Whoever takes on the role needs to hook Buchanan, Ward and Elia from general training and make them practise throwing at a target until they drop. With Ward maybe start with a barn door and then work up fromn there!

I don't think there's any doubt that it comes with a contract payoff; that's how things work. However, the 'personal reasons' bit is interesting. Best guesses as to what that means would be (1) he preferred to have it expressed that way, for personal self-esteem reasons, or more likely, (2) he didn't like the way JK was treated, and didn't particularly fancy being part of the new set-up, with all of the uncertainties. However, of all of them, Rowntree is the last one I'd have expected them to get rid of, along with Evans. Mapletoft and Easter live to fight another day it seems. Vacancy for a forwards coach, then.

Jones to take over? (Adam, not Eddie!)

(3) He doesn’t get on with Gustard
(4) For family reasons he is taking a break from rugby
(5) He didn’t feel he could get any more out of the current team
(6) He went for the DoR job and was rejected

Like most other people, I have no idea whether any of the above are true but there are a lot more than two “best” possibilities as to why “personal reasons” have been cited.

And if Rowntree has quit (and that is *if*) there won’t necessarily be a payoff. Depends on the circumstances.

Was he still ‘camping’ at John Kingstons’s or did he move his family in the end? I am personally sad it did not work out for either side.

So, any top notch forward coaches available?

Adam Jones will take over by is very much a scrum specialist so who runs the line out? Maybe NE as he did used to call them for us and was a useful option. PG can then concentrate on D.

No it wouldn't! This sort of thing happens all the time. Coach isn't required but is given the opportunity to appear as though he left of his own accord rather than being pushed out the door. Not much unusual about it. Allows him to escape any potential public embarrassment and also easier to get back into another job.

I like Wiggy but unfortunately he didn't do much for our pack in two years.

Can’t understand why he didn’t work. There’s still this feeling that the atmosphere and attitude of the playing squad has been wrong for some time.

We will never know till the post career books come out but there just doesn’t seem to have been a upward curve of development for so many promising talents.

It will be interesting to see how recent leavers Marlon, Charlie Matthews, Towmey etc fare under different coaching set ups.

I just hope that Paul Gustard can get the best out of the playing squad and coaches he has inherited.

I think there may be some very short memories here. Before Rowntree we were a penalty waiting to happen at every scrum, but we were much better last season even without Joe / Kyle when they were away with Quingland. Shame he has gone but wish him well and thanks for all his work.

Really? Worst 2 seasons since relegation. How long was GR with Quins?

Our scrum has been one of the very few OK points the last couple of years. I assume Rowntree had something to do with that.

Unfortunately there's also the lineout.

Im sure there was a stat that said our scrum was 11th in the table???

Memory tells me it popped up during a game (at scrum time). Ranking on Prem Scrums, Quins 11th

Really don't agree. Personal reasons make it sound like someone in his family is ill, or he's getting a divorce or he hates Gustard.

Mutual consent is far less loaded and raises far fewer questions.

The only thing I'd agree with on both of those is that our lineout has been atrocious. The scrum has been rteally poor last couple of seasons and was better when JK was coaching

'Mutual consent' would suggest he would have been sacked unless he agreed to go. 'Personal reasons' could literally be anything. Couldn't disagree with you more, but hey ho!

Would like to see Easter out next.

I imagine he was specifically sacked and agreed to go.

Now I imagine he’s been interfering with Charley.
