O/Tish "What were they thinking XV"

In discussion with a friend of mine about absurd potential selections for the Lions, we ended up compiling an England team containing solely players who had been picked as a result of a major aberration on the part of the selectors. Thought I'd share - feel free to add your own!

We avoided choosing people who were, say, promising youngsters thrown in too soon (e.g. Mathew Tait in 2005), rather focusing on genuinely puzzling and/or disastrous selections:

15. Ugo Monye (sorry, that one game against Argentina at FB wraps this up)
14. Phil Christophers
13. Shontayne Hape
12. Henry Paul (toyed with Sam Burgess here)
11. Lesley Vainikolo
10. Andy Goode (possibly a bit harsh but there weren't too many options at 10)
9. Shaun Perry

1. Perry Freshwater
2. Mark Regan (circa 2007)
3. June Porno-Salad
4. Alex Codling (never quite got that)
5. Mouritz Botha
6. Alex Sanderson
7. Hendrie Fourie
8. Jordan Crane

I've heard people say the worst choice at centre was Ayoola Erinle... I thought he was pretty good though!

Henry Paul definitely. I never understood the fascination.

Hendre Fourie and Shontayne Hape both played well in their short times in an England shirt.

Yeah I'd swap Hape out for Joel Tomkins. He was pretty useless.

Ollie Barkley for Goode, surely.

Thanks JG, I'd blocked that particular memory. Thanks for bringing it up! I'd also swap Banahan in for Christophers.

Is it harsh that JTH sprang to mind?

A bit harsh on Crane, who was a decent player but whose injuries undermined his chances of being a top notch international. Tom Wood, perhaps?

Corry/Borthwick/Noon got picked for too long, when they had long outstayed their welcome, but cannot be included in this kind of side.

Do we not have a coach that played fly half for England once that could be considered?

Martin Corry should be nowhere near these suggestions - he was a fine player and good captain for England.

Oh, I don't know: why not give it a whirl - can't be much worse as a FH, could he?

Borthwick was a quality lineout operator and a smart player. He broke in to THAT England team alongside Johnno and co - he'd earned it. Terrible captain though.

Dowson was for a long time one of the best backrowers in the country and did a job for England, but was kept too long.

Dowson was passed his best before England ever picked him unfortunately - Lancaster had him in as one of his "experienced but untainted by the 2011 world cup fiasco" selections in 2012.

Wood is a perfectly good player and was exceptional for Lancaster for much of 2012-2014-ish before he seemed to lose a bit of his power and work rate, but I suppose you could have him in there solely as an 8 based on the Cardiff 2013 disaster.

You're right - what I'm looking for in a centre is to be defensively sound - not have an eye for a gap, the ability to off load, step off both feet, link the play, pace to burn, the ability to create space, perhaps a nice kicking game to complement the 10.
defence, defence, defence!

So you really believe that Barritt is the worst player in history to put on the England 12 top?

Rather have Barritt at 12 for us than Roberts.

Mike Brown?
Only joking, but if I had to choose between him and Brad there's only one winner..

Thanks to Brown's dip in form, Saracens fans have got complacent in their criticism of our overall performance.

Sarries fans aren't really interested in Quins overall performance, as the teams only meet twice a year, quite often when both sides aren't at full strength.

Well thats rubbish. For the last four seasons, all the matches have been played outside international windows meaning both team are at full strength.

You've always been interested in popping on to our board to have a snipe at us, though, so I'm glad you've not forgotten us entirely.

NLB: BB has a bit of a kicking game, but he's a line-straightening 12 whose defence is that good as to win matches. Criticism of his flaws is absolutely fair but he brought a huge strength to the table (and continues to do so for Sarries)

JTH was far worse for England!
