a little odd why the Southern pool doesn't just have home and away.

Premiership Rugby have today (Friday 14th July) confirmed Harlequins' A League fixtures for the 2017/18 season.

In a restructured format of the competition, Harlequins 'A' are one of seven teams in the South Pool with eight teams in the North Pool.

Clubs in the South Pool play home or away against the other clubs in the Pool, while each club in the North Pool play home and away against the other clubs in the Pool. The top two clubs in the North Pool will advance to the semi-finals.

Clubs who finish in the top five in the South Pool after those six matches will advance to a second phase mini-league and play a further four matches against each other on a home or away basis.

The two Clubs who finish first and second following this second phase competition will progress to the semi-finals. Clubs who finish sixth and seventh in the South Pool will play each other home and away.

And I thought that Super Rugby's conferences and Rugby League with it's "Super 8's" were complicated!

*EDIT*
Having re-read this, there's a distinct mis-match in the number of games teams play, depending on whether you're in the North or South group. If you're in the North, you play home & away against the 7 other teams in your group, so 14 games. In the South, you play home OR away against the other 6 teams (6 games) and then the top 5 play home or away again, making 10 games in total (or 7 if you finish 6th or 7th). Now, you could say it's better to be in the South as you've got less games needed to reach the play-offs, or you could say it means the North teams have more game-time as a team which benefits them. Plus, using A-league games to give game time to players returning from injury is common, so there's more chance of doing that for teams in the North conference.

It just seems it's lop-sided, and could have been organised better!

Looks like Quins have got it wrong with the number of teams in the North there are only 6.
Wasps, Newcastle, Leicester, Northampton, Sale & Worcester.

You're right. Looking on the Premiership launch page for the A-League, it is 6 teams in the North pool. That makes it 10 games for each team. thumbs down

Still a very odd format. Looking forward to getting a few more of these this season, as I don't think I managed to make any last time

don't start on odd formats or we'll get into a long drawn out discussion on the Anglo-Welsh format (again)!
