Post match security

Very disappointed to see the attitude of Quins post game security tonight.

Pleasant autumnal evening plenty of fans drinking calmly outside the east stand. Must have been six or seven yellow security guards and clip board man positioned as in football strategically posted staring straight at the crowd. often pointing at people on the walkway

One particular female yellow guard visibly upset one child in a group of very young kids venturing on the pitch and shouting at them fiercely to get off. Young child then seen in tears.

Where has the family atmosphere gone? It was like a football match with over the top security staring straight at the supporters. I don’t think Tigers are the Leeds or Millwall of rugby so why the attitude couldn’t see any problems?

I appreciate safety is important for all of us but goodness knows who ordered this new and often intimidating approach which will of course inevitably invite some challenging behaviour. Quins management this was very poor please take note.

Not sure it’s lack of family atmosphere so much as terrible stewards.

The SE corner at the end of the match is a total joke.

For years it’s been fine - now it’s a standstill bottleneck with (for reasons unknown) hundreds of people trying to get to the Kings Bar (presumably - although why given it’s an overcrowded hell hole I’ll never know) while all of us in the east stand are trying to leave via gate 3.

Terrible terrible event management - one steward visible standing by pitch hordings saying nothing to anyone.

Yes it's not the same now, stewards are generally pretty poor now. Overzealous little fascists. Still don't see what's so bad about a bunch of kids running around in the grass

Thought the security at the gates where great, very chatty and friendly to my daughter and me
But in the library we had some guy in his mirrored wrap around Sanford hi viz who obviously thought he was terry tuff nut, very odd
As for not letting people on the pitch no problem with that at all

The security were very keen to remove people from Kings bar at 7pm. Stopped music dead on 7. Moved people out quickly. When asked why so early reasons given differed. Neighbours, shortage of staff, council. None of them gave the same reason. If it's neighbours then we will have to leave the ground before we kick off on a Friday night. The main man said they had been receiving verbal abuse from the corporate hospitality. I will speak to club in the week to get their take on what rather spoilt the day for the group of people I was with.

Don't understand not letting kids on the pitch. It's 20 degrees out, the grass is still growing. Kids don't weigh much and are wearing flat soled shoes in the most part. It's not like 16 heavyweights get down to some serious scrum practice against each other. You get a few balls kicked and some running around.

Big Deal!

When I met with David Ellis mid-season last season he told me kids on the pitch would be back by the end of the season. I think it's a great thing that the kids clearly love doing and, as you say, any damage would be minimal in good conditions like yesterday.

The pitch looks like it's suffering badly. Cut up during the scrums.

Doesn't excuse the heavy-handed approach though.

I believe the pitch was completely re-turfed in the Summer, soon after the Elton John concert.

OK - if the advice of professional pitch men is that it's good enough to take 80 minutes of 31 people running round on it in studs, pushing against each other, running, slipping, but it's not good enough to take 30 kids in trainers after the game, then so be it. I bow to their expert advice. However, if there is no expert advice I'd like to know why the ban exists.

I've no idea, but I would guess that they want to give it as little use as possible. Also, there may be a health and safety issue - kids could slip, or trip in any of the inevitable ruts from the game. Again, just a possibility.

Re: Post match security
TW Quin 24 September, 2017 19:22
Agree DOK - many kids bring a rugby ball with them to play with friends after the game. Has made the match day more special for them and presumably helped attract future supporters too.

Re: Post match security
blucherquin 24 September, 2017 23:28
Not that fussed on pitch - but rude stewards or the terrible crowd control is a big issue

Not the case. Ellis said it would be back last season, but obviously not then or now.

It was awful...

I have never felt more like an interloper at the ground I have been coming to for near 12 years as I did on Sat.

I didn't have cause to interact with them but observed them barking commands at supporters, shouting abuse at kids when rugby balls ended up on pitch. Staring at you as though you were about to commit some aggregious offence...

We really do seem to be becoming an annoyance not in keeping with the roadmap of being a shiny corporate events venue... that regrettably we need to be 'managed/tolerated' for the time being...

Casual Staff Stewards are poorly trained usually. There is a pretty unsubtle difference between a soccer crowd and a rugby crowd. In fact a rugby crowd are likely to be riled by aggressive stewarding more than a footy crowd who are kind of expecting it.

From my seat in the east stand, it appears there were a lot of new faces, many regular stewards were not there. I even saw a regular steward watching as a fan, which is good to see. Though I didn't hear any unpleasant comments from them, they were generally disengaged, unobservant, and in one case, in the wrong place. As far as the bar closing, think there is a curfew in place, thought it was more than 2 hours after game ends though.

While you're getting them to work on training, can you explain to them how to pour a pint of Guinness properly.

I don't know for sure, but I don't think this forum is monitored by Quins management.

Why not make a direct complaint to a Supervisor (yellow Jacket) and/or contact the office?

I think I had a confrontation with this individual on Saturday after the game ... I told her she needed to brush up on her customer relations training !!

One game last year, I was walking back from the loo and stopped to watch the big screen as play was in the opposite corner and we looked like we might score. Blocking nobody's view. Some sumptuous steward came up and told me to move as it was a CRIMINAL OFFENCE to stand there. Can't have been there for more than 1t seconds.

It's all gone down hill since Kevin stopped stewarding!

I had a conversation with a police officer outside Wimbledon tennis this year about crowd control issues. He described some stewards as having "yellow jacket syndrome" where, as soon as the day-glo is donned, they jettison common sense and take on powers way in excess of their brief and then insist on using them.

I’d start with how to pour an ale first - half the pubs in Britain can’t pour a Guiness properly

Not sure about the history of this but I do remember being at the Stoop for a final game of the season against my beloved Saints. After the final whistle there were hundreds of spectators on the pitch enjoying the sunshine, mixing with the players and of course lots of kids running around with rugby balls. Whether your, indeed our, groundsman would appreciate this on a match to match basis is another matter but in my view, children in particular should be encouraged whenever possible to have a run around after the game and get close up to their heroes. Our stewards at the Gardens are pretty good as a general rule but our pitch remains very much out of bounds with the easy excuse of 'elf and safety' readily available whenever required.

There was a time when kids were banned from the outfield of county cricket games....this has largely changed now as it was an enormous own goal by the clubs involved.

I'd rather they took it off the menu altogether. The very idea of having a drink which takes 5 minutes to pour at a busy bar.

And another bugbear... thank goodness, not yet rearing its ugly head at Stoop, but give it time...

Guinness can be your friend! Get about ten of you and when you get served order ten halves of Guinness. Pass each one back as it arrives. When the bar person has finished and asks if you want anything else say yes, please, another ten halves of Guinness. Repeat until satisfied/match starts/bar closes then pay up. Your own personal bar attendant.

You can actually one-pour Guinness if you do it properly. Shouldn't take any longer than any other beer. The frustrating thing is the Guinness is actually very good at the Stoop. Usually.

What would really help, though, is 2 pint cups, which I will be using again in Northampton. One for the first half, one for the 2nd. Job done.
