Interesting article in the Graun this morning about how the injury lists among the clubs is growing so quickly this season.

Cheers

There's a paragraph near the end about a proposal to give alternative fixtures for England and France during the 6 nations. Not entirely sure what that means, and never heard the proposal. Anyone know?

That was the idea that was floated recently that England & France wouldn't play the first w/e of the 6N. Instead, they would play on the first "rest" week between rounds 2 & 3. You can read a bit more about it here...

Interesting comment under the article that pitches are now too narrow for the increased intensity of the modern game, increasing collisions. There may be something in that.

True but for Quins' sake let's hope that doesn't bring about changes. Where am I going to walk with my pint and get told off by the stewards if the pitch is made wider?

At least if they were to want to widen the pitch, there's options at The Stoop. You'd struggle to expand anywhere at Kingsholm or The Rec...

Well, drop the number 13 and have a team of 14!

Re: Injuries and the Professional Game
T-Bone 26 September, 2017 16:54
Someone near me was saying we have one of the narrowest pitches in the league. Seems a bit odd given we are supposedly a team who loves to chuck the ball around and they could definitely use some of the space in front of the east stand

An extreme reaction to Saili's injury but I like it.

Genuinely though I'd have thought more of the injury issues come about due to the conditioning of some of the big boys these days. When you've got forwards the size that they are, and the speed that they are, these injuries are really not surprising.

I really don't know what you do about that though.

I believe Tigers have the narrowest pitch in the league.

Tigers have the shortest pitch. That's why they didn't get to host any of the 2015 world cup matches. In fact the laws were sharpened ahead of the last world cup to make sure that a pitch so short couldn't (again) be used for world cup matches. Tigger was not pleased.

Law 1.2.d

Yes you are right my mistake, I have 91m in my head though no idea if that's accurate!

I've said it before but a possible solution is to set a weight limit per team. This could be set differently for each tier/standard if necessary/appropriate. This would reduce the incentive to constantly "bulk up" and reduce the severity of hits across the board. The game might revert back to one suitable for all shapes and sizes.

Tigers stretched their pitch last season - that was why they had a bald in goal for most of the season as the grass failed to take on the new section.

The law sets out a maximum - 100m between posts +2x22m in-goal x 70m.
It never used to set a minimum - just a requirement to set out as close as possible.
The latest revision, gives a minimum of 94m + 2x6m x 68m for internationals - with 5m round the edge.

Premiership regulations may set a minimum.
Given they set out a minimum distance between urinals - I would hope they cover the size of the ground.

Ah, interesting. Thx.

So that's when they knocked down these sheds and put up the stand with the sloping roof?

We had the narrowest pitch in the world a few years ago against Sale. Scared of Hanley and Cueto. How embarrassing did that turn out to be! smiling smiley

Is that when they put about 40 points on us? Not our greatest hour

Yes, and I believe both of them, at least once each, came inside and ran straight through our defence down the middle of the pitch to score. smiling smiley

Aly Eykyn has just tweeted that due to a lack of bodies (not clear which side) Quins are training with L-Irish at Surrey Sports Park today. Not good!

We probably had Rob Jewell on the wing chasing shadows all day. I brought a party of under tens to watch my beloved Quins and had to then explain, wearing my coach's hat, why we got tonked. Did Jason Robinson not carve us up as well?

Would it not be wise to give everyone time off to fully recover? Of course it may well be non-contact training.

Haskell saying some interesting stuff this week (no, really) about how he reckons the data collected from games and training isn't used very well, and that some coaches just carry on with the regular training sessions because they think they have to, and are scared of being the first to stop, not necessarily because they are gaining much from them.

I seem to recall that Sarries have a pretty light training load during the week.

Perhaps they could hook the players up to electric shock things, make them re-watch the matches, and for every brainless penalty they gave away, give them a zap.

June Porno Salad would be dead after one session!

Pundit Arena on Twitter has posted a short piece with NEv, where he looks at the state of injuries generally and the strain it puts on the players, clubs, and fans.

Re: Injuries and the Professional Game

To cross the streams here and refer to a separate thread I started about the training with Irish thing -- it's well worth watching this week's Rugby Tonight.

Training is our usual training, it's just we don't have anywhere near enough fit players to carry out a training session - hence we've joined with Irish.

We have 45% of the squad unavailable according to Mapletoft.

It's a really interesting piece and discussion that follows.

Re: Injuries and the Professional Game
T-Bone 05 October, 2017 09:37
Yep, agree it was a decent piece. They do do some good stuff on that show, in amongst the cringe worthy laddish humour
