I didn't think players could move midseason.

Geez what happened last week before your game against us that lead to this?

Ugo says he knows for sure it’s a done deal and he’ll be available to play for them next week.

So, I’m now in the camp of wondering what the hell is going on at Quins.

1) I didn’t think this could happen

2) Hes only 25 and he’s an England player (fringe but still....)

What in God’s name is going on?

It's just another sign that Rugby Football is meandering down the path taken by Association Football. In theory, clubs are not allowed to approach a player until January - in practice, the player's agent lets it be known that a certain player is open to offers. In legal terms, no rules have been broken.

The interesting bit is that presumably, as Marland had not cmpleted his contract, Sale would have had to pay a fee to buy out that contract. I bloomin well hope we drove a hard bargain.

Remember the rumours about Care and Brown last year? There was general joy when they announced they were staying...but they hadn't re-signed, they just decided not to break their contracts.

Visser, Roberts, Care, Brown will be indications of what is happening at the club when the time comes to put pen to paper. These announcements should be within the next 3-4 months I'd guess.

It’s a done deal - Ugo being so definitive. No way he’d risk being that wrong on live TV and he’s still mates with everyone.

Well, seeing as he's still under contract, Sale can't officially talk to hin 'til January unless the club have agreed to talk. In which case, we should be talking about compensation from Sale. Plus, is there any chance we'd look at Charnley who will have been pushed down the pecking order even further?

Based on our lack of signing injury cover for the back row, I'd say we have a cash flow problem. Marland might be allowed to go with no replacement in order to save us some money.

It looks like its really time to rebuild the team. I'd guess we are going to rebuild around the likes of Smith & Marchant.

So that would leave us with Visser, Walker and Alofa. Maybe Ross Chisholm. All the Academy wings are crocked. Unless Kingston has persuaded someone else to part with an international standard wing halfway through the season.

Re: Yarde off to Sale
DOK. 27 October, 2017 19:31
Good! He doesn't want to play for Quins then dump him. Let's not spend anymore money on someone with the wrong attitude, however he achieved it. If he's not professional enough to honour a contract, then let's get rid of him before his negativity spreads.

Personally I liked him. I supported him a number of times on here when he came in for criticism. Disappointed it came down to turning up late/refusing to go on the Captain's run, that's just petulance not professionalism. It's a loss of Marland Yarde the player, but good riddance otherwise.

Suspect he's taken up too much of management time, let's hope they can get back to the real issues Harlequins have without this sort of sideshow.

Re: Yarde off to Sale
blucherquin 27 October, 2017 19:40
Total guess but....

The Sale rumours were very strong just before this kicked off with Yarde.

Club must have known he was off or wanted to be.

Assume some kind of bust up as a result - either he just acted up so he could force an immediate move or maybe JK said if he wanted out he should just go...

Either way we’ll get compensation. And his relationship with club was clearly over when the “discipline” stuff came up.

Agree, has been good this season but I don't think has ever been as good for us as LI. We obviously don't know exactly what has gone on and I hope it is not a reflection of wider issues at the club but if he has become 'high maintenance' then lets get him off the wage bill and he can go and play in front of 3k people at Sale

Re: Yarde off to Sale
DOK. 27 October, 2017 19:47
I wonder if someone from Sale had made an "understanding" of severely increased pay and Marland was using that to either get more at Harlequins or get out. Sounds a bit like the James Johnson thing to me - frankly if you don't want to play for the team (for whatever reason) then I'd rather you went and went quickly.

On the basis that Sale needed Quins permission to speak with him , its easy to see why it all moved quickly over the last week or so, especially when he knew he didn't have an England place

Interesting dynamic as he will start as International Cover for Solomona
and Denny Solomona's Fiancee is Marland Yardes ex girlfriend ( Mrs CQ knows lots of stuff like that !).. Christmas Parties will be fun .

Opportunity for Charlie Walker , JK has been keen to unload British Internationals so works for him as well , lets see if anyone appears ..

Well Cordero (who we were linked with) is currently not playing as the Super Rugby season is done. I expect he will play in the AIs (and of course we have to actually want him, and he actually has to want to come, and the Jaguares will have to allow him to leave)!!

Easy sunshine.

Cookie was saying we need to spend the money first, it does not matter if him going freed up any cash, we never spent any to bring in any cover for Wallace (I guess that what he means??).
I was stating that the 400k injury money is extra, maybe that is why it was not spent on a replacement, where as the money saved on Yarde was already being spent so no reason not to use it

Re: Yarde off to Sale

He is saying that, for injury cover, the club has to spend additional money (over and above what is currently being paid). To replace Yarde, however, the club would just be re-allocating money that would otherwise have gone to Yarde - ie the net spend is the same, whereas for injury cover additional funds are needed.

I think, however, that the analysis overlooks the fact that the club must (I suspect) have insurance to cover the salaries of injured players.

Dark Pies 27 October, 2017 21:05
Disappointing. I'm not Yarde's biggest fan but he brings a defensive game that Walker and Visser just don't have.
I suspect he (rightly or wrongly) blames his fringe status with England on our relatively poor form the last 3 years and on the lack of top level European rugby.....potentially that frustration has turned over time into a serious falling out with the coaches, and was brought to a head by not making the AI squad.
He probably doesn't get as many scoring chance as he might elsewhere....although whether Sale will give him more is dubious!
All speculation and its still pretty shocking that we'd allow this to happen, unless of course we want shot of him and are happy to cash in....

I had no problem with JJ following the cash. He's a Samoan lad and has a lot of low-income family to support, that's what they do. They can't afford not to take the higher offer.

Re: Yarde off to Sale
HonkyTonk 27 October, 2017 21:34
JJ didn't get a better offer. He let quins know he was not signing a new deal (he was under the impression there was/would be big offers from France). Quins acted and went and got PDJ. When the expected offers never came in for JJ he ended up going to Sarries on pretty much the same money he was on at quins

Not sure those things are mutually exclusive Rodney

Proposition A - Rugby is engaged in a spiral of ever higher wages which will lead it to the horrible state that Association Football is in
Proposition B - Quins are in a terrible state on and off the field and may become the Accrington Stanley of Rugby.

WTF when was the last time a 1st choice player left mid season to join another premiership club?

How badly is the club being run that either Yarde felt he had no choice to leave or the club were unable to enforce his contract?

If Yarde has forced a move away mid season for money reasons or his own agenda I'm quite happy to condemn him for it.
But like I said when was the last time a 1st choice player has done that in the AP to leave mid season? There must be a reason for it that has meant he is so unhappy at the club that he can't continue or the club no longer feels it is able to manage him.

Well whatever has gone on, the club need to make a statement of some description sooner rather than later as the speculation is well and truly filling the void. I’m disappointed to see Yarde go and I think we’ll struggle to replace him mid season unless we’ve got someone lined up. (I rarely expect the club to be that organised I’m afraid)

I never felt we got the best out of him so maybe a move is for the best but the way it has happened does not feel good at all. I don’t think the club is any more skint now that it was last year to be honest. Why would we even sign Saili etc if there was an impending cash flow problem?

If the story of him leaving only broke last night, I wouldn't expect anything till today at least (Sale were still denying it last night). There was alot of fuss about the club not making a statement about Lowe, in the end they did, when the time was right for all involved.

I find the launchbury to Sale story interesting. I take it that is from next season??

Re: Yarde off to Sale
Nev's Left Boot 28 October, 2017 09:07
As far as I'm aware players and their agents can speak to other clubs before Jan, if agreed by the owning club.
i.e - quins and MY will have sat down to discuss the new contract, he either signs or doesn't. At this point, whether legal or not, the agents job is to go and see what he can get.

it's entirely feasible that JK attributes MY's recent actions down to poor attitude because he feels he isn't getting what he wants.

At which point, the club may have decided enough is enough. If Sale are going to pay for him, now then so be it. if he is not in our plans, for whatever reason, then he should be let go.

Now, i can't say im happy about this, he is a good player, and the kind of player i want to see at the club in terms of young and close to international class, however i only want players committed to the club, he has shown to the management that he is not, so fair play to JK.

The club has some young wingers, so perhaps the club feels paying MY what he thinks he is worth is not prudent.

Wingers, not where Quins need to spend their cap either...Quins need beasty forwards...so if this season we limp along and then see a few big forwards rock up, fine by me. I'd also like to see Academy lads get game time when back fit as well. If this season is a flop, it won't be because of wingers....

If im cross about the club, is about silly Marler & Sink doing silly things, I'm irritated that two of our highlight signings havn't touched a ball in anger due to injuries.....

Re: Yarde off to Sale
Jus-Quin-Time 28 October, 2017 09:15
Its almost 5th November and a good time for a conspiracy. Here's mine:

Solomona's unexpected return from the England training camp leads to an internal inquest at Sale. They discover he is unhappy because he is not developing. The solution is to bring in another international standard winger who can work with him, mentor him and help him develop. Permission is asked from Premiership Rugby/RFU to speak to other clubs and it is given.

Sale puts feelers out to other clubs. Inviting clubs to offer up a winger in return for appropriate compensation. Sarries offer Earle, Quins offer both Visser or Yarde.

Visser and Yarde are informed that the club has spoken with Sale. Visser throws an absolute wobbly and he and JK are at loggerheads. He isn't selected for a couple of games. Yarde, who is selected, plays well and is confident of his position in the club.

Sale look at the costs, salaries, contract implications and decide that Yarde would be the best fit. Their offer is accepted. Yarde is informed and, quite appropriately, he refuses to turn up for training feeling that the club have been disloyal. JK recourses to disciplinary proceedings giving the impression that it is Yarde who has been the cause of the discontent.

There we are. Lots of holes to be picked in that scenario not least questioning the attitude of a player that has been moved on against his wishes or the reason why a club might choose to offer players under these circumstances.

No evidence or facts. A work of fiction that is about as convincing as Yarde asking Sale for a job mid season.

Re: Yarde off to Sale
Mayor West 28 October, 2017 09:37
Didn't somebody say that Tim didnt know what he is supposed to have done to be dropped. Perhaps his agent had been approached and the club got wind of Tim "speaking" to Sale and were unhappy with the situation. Just more theories. And am I right in thinking that Sale also wanted to sign Sonny Bill Williams. There's something afoot at Sharks.

Early last season I was impressed with Sale's Edwards/Odogwu wing partnership. Amazes me that Diamond is such a wing collector that he's pretty much binned both of them.

Be careful what you wish for on the tight five front. It must be your turn to get Paul Doran Jones soon...

For what it's worth, this from the Guardian:

Steve Diamond, Sale’s director of rugby, ... denied that Marland Yarde was set to join the club. Reports have suggested Yarde has left Harlequins less than a week after he was dropped for disciplinary reasons. Ugo Monye claimed the 25-year-old England winger has agreed to join the Sharks but Diamond said: “He must know more than we do then. There is no done deal as far as I’m concerned.”

Actually, now that I read it again, this sounds more like a confirmation than a denial. That there is "no done deal" suggests to me that there is indeed a not yet done deal.

Following the controversy surrounding Solomona's arrival , hardly surprising that Diamond chooses his words carefully .

Oh yes, good point. I had forgotten that.

Is Solomona not with the lady that used To be with Yarde? If the move is true Sale won't need a DOR they will need Jeremy Kyle! At least media city is not far away!

Sale fan - we are more confused than you, we have great depth at Wing and even have Paolo out on loan and I would have him in the team in a heartbeat after last seasons performances for us.
Now if you had some quality tight 5 players looking for a change..........

Early last season I was impressed with Sale's Edwards/Odogwu wing partnership. Amazes me that Diamond is such a wing collector that he's pretty much binned both of them.

Be careful what you wish for on the tight five front. It must be your turn to get Paul Doran Jones soon...

You wouldn't wish that on your worst enemy (unless it was Sarries)

This seriously needs a club statement. Too many unanswered questions to let this one drift. It's so abnormal that I can't see how they'll be able to leave it unexplained, as painful as the explanation could be.

I would suggest that the club has made the only statement it can at the moment, let`s allow the story to unfold bit.

Just read this on the Wasps board

"I've heard that Yarde is going to Bordeaux next Summer, which Quins have known about for a few weeks. A few issues recently led to a discussion and ended up with a "you can leave now type statement, which is what looks to be happening. From my understanding, French clubs can only sign players mid-season as injury jokers and Bordeaux are ok on that front."

If that's true then we'll be cutting the atmosphere with a knife at the first training session !

Quinns are better off without a player who's not committed to the club. A fresh start might be the best thing for him.

It's not such an odd signing, Denny and Byron will be on international duty for England and Scotland respectively in November and the six nations which will leave us a bit short of experienced wingers. We have a small squad.

Never really lived up to expectations, good riddance as far as I am concerned.

Never been a popular member off the squad with rest of the players and with good reason - good riddance.
