Id rather see the Anglo welsh actually an A team competion (maybe difficult to achieve though) rather than the 22 game season being reduced.

Or very radical.....maybe how about all teams having to field two or three academy players in every game?

Its all a bit of a mess isn't it?

Player welfare seems to be being compromised by the demands of the rugby calendar. The international games are the big money spinners, but the clubs seem to be getting an increasingly raw deal for producing England qualified players.

An alternative might be to expand to 14 teams & split into conferences in the way that Pro14 is now. It could mean ring fencing (which I'm not a fan of) or some sort of system whereby any team in the Championship that wants to take part has to show a formal interest a year out so that they can plan accordingly, and have a play-off between the lowest Prem team and the applicant at the end of the season.

Players want the, challenge, kudos, recognition of their talent plus the that comes with international representative honours. The fans want to see their good players playing for their team in the premiership games.

Players like Billy V and the like have already established themselves but have the right to challenge the number of games they play and their welfare.

Lets face it there have still been some dodgy decisions about letting players return to the field after head knocks even though the HIA protocol is in place.

If the number of games they were allowed to play per season Im sure the majority of players would choose international games or the euro cup big games.

Im sure not many fans attend internationals regularly but obviously watch on TV. So reducing the number of games would starve the club game and mean even bigger squads.

Looks like a smoke-screen to me.

Oh, player welfare - lets not change anything except make the salary cap a little bigger so squads can get bigger and players get more of a rest.

So who goes the bottom two, or done by location so no one area is over represented? All a bit dumb imo.

Yes, I ahve to say I'm a bit fed up with hearing the international players (mostly English it has to be said) banging on about player welfare and playing too much - but they still want hte same/better salaries obviously. Restrict playing hours in a season, and reduce salaries accordingly. Then more room under the cap for larger squads.

Don't see the point in reducing the premiership from 12 to 1O.
Most domestic players can handle that, providing that's all they're doing.

Ultimately the only players at the tough end of player welfare are the international players.

Is there not an argument to cut down on the summer tours and autumn internationals - perhaps alternate seasons i.e. every other year. Perhaps 1-2 max Autumn international in between world cups? The summer tours should be for aspiring international players, not established.

Clearly the 6N and World cup should be the international focus.

How does funding work for International players when away from club? Do clubs get compensated?

The Home internationals generate a significant amount of money for the RFU (37 million in ticket sales, 46 million in broadcasting and 30 million in hospitality + other stuff such as merchandising). I doubt that there would be much appetite to reduce this.

There is absolutely no chance of world rugby reducing the number of annual internationals.

Never Sleep, those really are massive figures, aren't they?.
Yes, they are. The RFU annual report came out today. I started reading it, but will wait until I am at work tomorrow to finish it

Wow! So, Hospitality produces nearly as much revenue as actual ticket sales? No wonder the halfway line in the stands is empty after half time....
