The highlight for me was the tackle by Mercer tackling Marcus Smith literally inches from the line after Smith had run the length of the field.

yep and a good example of a backrowers endurance over a backs speed. There was similar in the Bath away game with a Bath prop nearly chasing down Ibitoye over 3/4 of the pitch

I'd say more likely to be evidence that in pure sprinting terms there's no substitute for long legs.

Players like Smith and Care may be agile and quick off the mark, but in terms of pure top speed in a straight line they aren't actually that noteworthy.

I thought Smith was quick, but he seemed to flag after about 50 metres. He needs to train with Walker!

Yep that’s twice now he’s had a breakaway that he couldn’t finish. I’d have put a little grubber in which would have left it easier to score and harder to tackle

I'm surprised he didn't dive for the line.

He certainly shouldn't have run towards touch...

Re: Highlights: Harlequins 20-5 Bath
DOK. 05 March, 2018 11:36
Actually, I thought if he couldn't get the line then touch was next best thing. Rather than getting stripped of the ball and it hoofed up field, it reset the gain line to a few metres from the try line.

I think we won the subsequent lineout too!

I don't really think Smith did head for the touchline. He caught it about 8m infield, and was tackled just inside the 5m line, having actually straightened late. More that Mercer did brilliantly to angle his tackle to take him sideways over the touchline rather than just sliding over the tryline.

Well ok, he should have come in field a bit. Not much, a few metres.

If he'd stayed infield, he'd have been turned over as another Bath backrower was on him with two of our boys still trying to catch up.

Well he so nearly surfed over, all the same. Great effort, deserved better. Maybe needs a bit of time with Margot Wells like Brownie.

Re: Highlights: Harlequins 20-5 Bath
thomh 05 March, 2018 18:41
He is only a fly half. While more pace is rarely a bad thing, 80m sprints for the try line are not going to be a key facet of his career.

Maybe next time he will have taken on board our criticisms and score. By the way our players trotted down the pitch you would think they decided he didn't need any help. Isn't Waters supposed to be quick?

Saintquin 05 March, 2018 19:02
I wondered why he didn't zig zag a bit. A big forward would have slowed down a bit with a couple changes of direction.

Harlequins, (was once) probably the best rugby club in the world!

You can hear us supporting the team well on that video.

One thing I don't think has been mentioned enough is how much we owe a big thank you to Tim Visser. Until his interception try, we were up against it and our confidence was brittle. After that try we slowly started to grow in confidence, & I thought our goal line defence in the second half was exceptional.

We have had many false dawns before, but lets hope that this is the start of some better form and better results.

COYQ!

Get that but it only just about made up for his lack of an attempt to tackle Fotuali'i moments before. He should have smashed him and cut off any chance off an offload.

Fair point, although I think he thought Chisholm would get Fotuali'i, but Faletau used his body very cleverly to block Chisholm as he got the offload away.

Visser's long arms can affect the intercept but not the tackle...

Having said that, had he intercepted at the end, it would have probably been another try for Quins. on such margins, BPs are won. (yes - I know we would've needed another!)

Nah I think it was just a plain mistake by Visser. Even if Faletau hadn't made contact with Chisholm, Fotuali'i would still have been Visser's man. Chisholm was never anywhere near him.

This. It looked to me like Visser was wanted to stay on Banahan but changed his mind to late try to get to Fotuali'i so ended up doing neither.

As long as they don't say that when the ball arrives...
