It is an interesting article. And further emphasises the point that we cannot condemn Quins for making losses. The problem is widespread across the game.

The worry for me is whether this sort of move would result in lots of players upping sticks and moving to France where there isn't a salary cap (I don't think).

Yes you can manage that by saying that England will only pick players playing in England, but I wonder if that would be incentive enough if the wage difference was around the 50% mark.

I certainly agree about scrapping the marquee players rule, but I'm not sure how they'd impose a unilateral pay-cut. I'm pretty sure they'd be on dodgy legal grounds trying to impose something like that.

As for agents, whilst they are a blight on the game, again you can't tell players they can't have agents as that's their choice. Again it would need to be managed by ensuring that any payments to agents are accurately included within the salary cap calculations (although I'm not sure if they do this already).

Pretty sure the cap in France is £9m, £2m more than ours. But they reigning it in dramatically. 12 of the starting 15 for Racing are French, albeit I’m sure they’re still well paid.

I always feel hypocritical on this one. I don't give a fig who plays for Quins or where they come from as long as we smash it up in the Prem but at the same time bemoaning the surfeit of overseas players here stifling homegrown talent who could play for England.

Doesn't their cap work slightly differently, like covering coaches too or something like that?

I wonder if Healey would give up 20% of his presenter's wage at the same time?

He has a point though. What’s better that the English game goes into disrepair with clubs all going bankrupt in say 5 years of that players take a small pay cut in during the long-term survival of the professional club game in England?

I am sure he has a point, but it may be better to invoke a pay freeze in the future - clubs and players will not want protracted pay dispute that might end up with strike action, creating further loss of revenue. Telling players they face a huge pay cut isn't likely to incentivise anyone. Quite apart from problems relating to the run up to world cup.

I'm not on this forum to knock Quins but I ask these relevant questions;
Why are Chiefs top of the Prem AND in profit?
What is so different with our business model that other clubs don't follow?

I don't have a clue as to the whys and wherefores but it seems to me that some clubs are quite happy to be in the red. It doesn't seem to matter until the rug is pulled from under their feet. Then its "Oh, poor us, what are we to do?".
Financially managing the club (most Prem clubs don't seem to) properly in the first place might be a start!

Maybe I'm wrong. If I am, please explain.

I'm no Accountant (thank you God) but being in profit does not neccessarily mean there is no debt lurking around somewhere, i.e. cost of building new stadium etc.
