Trio re-sign with Saints
Date: Wednesday 22nd February 2012
Issued on behalf of Northampton Saints

Northampton Saints today announced a trio of new contracts for current players – prop Tom Mercey, wing Anders Mogensen and hooker Ross McMillan.

Mercey, 24, joined the Saints from Saracens in the summer of 2010. In his 18 months at Franklin’s Gardens the prop, who has won honours with England Saxons, has seen plenty of game time in all competitions, with the 2011 Heineken Cup final just one of his 38 appearances.

“Moving to the Saints was good for me and I’m enjoying being at the club,” said Mercey. “Playing in the Heineken Cup final is an obvious highlight, but running out and playing in front of the great Northampton fans has also been enjoyable over the past 18 months. There are some good players at the club and I’m concentrating on improving my own game.”

Mogensen has yet to make his first team debut, but the 20-year-old winger has been identified as one to watch in the current Saints Senior Academy. Although his game time was limited in his first season as a full-timer at Franklin’s Gardens, he has played plenty of rugby so far in 2011/12, predominantly on loan with Cambridge, for whom Mogensen scored nine tries in his 16 appearances. He is currently dual registered with Moseley and is stepping up his experience playing in The Championship.

“I had a frustrating first year, but everyone at the Saints was very patient and I’m enjoying my rugby this year,” Mogensen said. “I’ve been learning a lot playing for Cambridge and Moseley and for the Wanderers, and training with the Saints during the week. Hopefully if I put in the work I can put myself into a position where I can contribute to the Saints first team in the future.”

McMillan, another 24-year-old front rower, initially arrived at Franklin’s Gardens this season on trial, the hooker having previously played for Birmingham and Solihull in The Championship. He then signed a short-term deal until the end of the current season, which has now been extended.

“I’d like to thank the coaches for giving me the opportunity at the Saints,” said McMillan. “Being at the club has helped invigorate my rugby and it is enjoyable being part of a squad which is aiming high rather than battling relegation, which is what I’ve experienced over the past couple of years. It has also been good to be able to concentrate on my game full-time and I’m happy to be staying at Franklin’s Gardens.”

Director of rugby Jim Mallinder said that all three players were promising and provided added depth to the Saints squad.

“We need players who can contribute to the squad and this is why we’ve extended the contracts for all three players,” he said. “Tom has been a regular part of the first team squads throughout his time at the club and we know that he can deliver good performances on a regular basis.

“Anders and Ross may not have had their first team opportunities, but they have both built up their experience in The Championship and are very eager to show what they can do in the black, green and gold.”

Tom's a big signing. he would be the best tight head on the books at quite a few AP clubs and some must have been sniffing. (sale, wasps, LI, bath , wuss and exeter for example).

now Tom needs to carry on improving his loose play and he'll be england material before too long.

really really pleased about this.

The front row must (and rightly so) take up a massive chunk of our salary cap. It's mind boggling that Mercey is considered third choice at tighthead when he is so massively talented.

Some fantastic re-signings have been announced over the last few weeks and in my opinion, Anders Mogenson is potentially the most exciting. Really think this lad has got a very, very bright future.

Looks like "The Scrum" (c) has longevity.

Great news.

Do you think the signing of Ross will let Mike Haywood play 7? Sorry but every time I see Mike play I reckon he's "wasted" hidden away in the depths of the scrum.

Excellent! I was a bit worried that Mercey might leave us (as others have said, he'd be first or close-to-first choice at some other AP teams), so that he's signed on for more is great. Good news about the other two too!

Goes back to what I said elsewhere about the signings that please me most are re-signings!

Excellent news. Haven't seen Ross play yet but Tom and Anders are good squad members ready to step up soon I reckon.

Excellent news. Anders has always been quick but now he looks much stronger as well (as you'd expect I suppose).

How come Tom got picked for the Saxons when he was not half as good as he is now?

I am really glad that they have signed on. I was getting a bit worried about Tom not signing because he is our third choice prop now.

I am sure Morganson will be excellent when he is older. I do like a bit of speed down the wings.

I have never heard of Ross McMillan before, what is he like?

Pleasantly surprised re Mercey, like others, thought he would have made a cracking for some other AP clubs - as it is, it's a cracking re-signing for us.

McMillan's signing makes me think this will be Andy Long's last season with us which will be shame - never let us down. Coaches obviously liked what they see in McMillan, so good on him.

Mogensen obviously has something about him. Great pace and step from what i'm seen. Don't know how he is defensively? Looking forward to seeing how he goes in the first team.

I'd suggest that McMillan would be replacing Sharman rather than Long.

Long is probably not on a huge wage and is IIRC coaching elsewhere (Cambridge?). If he still wants to play he would be perfect to keep as 3rd/4th choice backup as he has put in some very decent performances this season.

5 Hookers (Hartley, Haywood, Sharman, Long and McMillan) next year would be a bit too much of a luxury? Of the above, only Long's (who's 35 this year) contract is up this summer as I understand it.

Maybe McMillan to be dual registered and made avaiable for loan? he can continue to play week in, week out as well as improve his game in the manner Jim suggests he has been.

It could be handy to "pick him up and put him down" as well as being in the mix natrually. Think Dylan away with England, Mikey with saxons (possibly?), leaving us 3 in the squad.

Maybe there is room for all 5..?

We often seem to get this are 5/4 hookers too many. Short answer, no. With Dyl away at every international break one injury and were staring at converting props like Bath had to do this season.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

Brilliant to see the lads have decided to stay on at FG and like many over the moon to see Tom is staying put!

Ah - the most interesting man in the world, Robbie !! Only surpassed by Mr Norris

Really pleased re Tom M - 5 top class props says Heineken Cup rugby is a priority

I thought Mr Long was doing a Shieldsy and Mr Sharman looking at SA ? 3 Hookers is not a lot when one is away half the season..
