Strange statistics

Well, Saints aren't playing and new signings/current squad/who should we sign have all been discussed at length (to put it politely). So, forced to browse the AP league table I couldn’t help noticing some strange statistics. Both Tigers and Quins have had unusual seasons when it comes to tries and points scored, as traditionally they are among the best on both scores. Quins are almost identical to London Irish on both tries (36/37) and points (372/371), but their position in the table reflects that. Tigers, however, are 5th despite having scored only 26 tries and 367 points. To put that in context, that is second bottom in tries scored (LW close behind with 25) and by some margin (Irish 37, Newcastle 45). Total points similarly but at least well ahead of LW (189) and closer to Irish (371) and Newcastle (370). Defensively they are merely on a par with the other top 6 clubs, so they must be setting a record for the number of wins by the smallest margins. Obviously Tuilagi has been badly missed, but otherwise they have a decent set of backs and good ball from a dominant pack. Quins similarly, although they have been losing games as a result of their poor point-scoring despite having a strong settled squad (although I might have to be corrected on that). So what’s been going on?

Tigers points for and against are 367 & 369, despite them having won 12 out of 19 games. Their results up to Christmas consisted of several narrow wins and a couple of fairly hefty defeats.

The thing that stands out for me in the table is that London Welsh have been outscored on tries by a factor of five to one, and their average margin of defeat is 35 points.

lot of talk on the tigers board about their defence and defence coaching but from being runaway top try scorers a few seasons back to be so low is a spectacular fall from grace.

they still get to play welsh so that may well bump things up a bit but still....

one statistic i read re tigers that not much seems to have been mentioned is that they are the only team set to miss the eqp target and subsequent payout (c£100k)

I seem to recall commentary on a recent game saying Tigs had yet to get a TBP.

Sod's law says they'll get one on the last day of their season!

Hopefully we won't even be that generous to them.
