New number 8... anyone?

Anyone heard anything? It's very very quiet and I hope that something is or has indeed happened behind the scenes.
Season is edging closer and closer and currently we are weaker than last season in the pack, and that pack struggled last year.

Depending on the game we play I can imagine a backrow of Gibson/Wood, Harrison and Eadie as being very good. I see a bit more of an issue when we rest either 7 or 8 and end up with the sort of backrow that we have favoured playing for years that is somewhat under-powered going forward. I really hope there's still another 8 coming but I wouldn't we'd rather see no one than the wrong player or at the wrong price?

Wasn't it mooted that while Picamoles spot in the squad will be filled it won't necessarily be by another 8?

The lack of news is frustrating but the club can't be expected to update us at every stage of the process.

Reckon our strongest xv could well have Courtney at 6 (for at least part of a game)

I have thought that before too Thrupp artist. Frustratingly we are actually quite strong at 6 and that level of innovation/risk seems very un-Mallinder like. Would you pair Ribbans or Api with Day? or someone else?

Api looks underused in my book. Won't happen this year with the Fiji games but would love to see him with a full preseason. He will never be your banker 2 ball at the front of the lineout, but good looking hands and off loading game as well as the bulk to add a bit of grunt in the tight.

Ribbons looked one of the best young locks in the Premiership last season and hopefully will build on that this year - pair him with one of the other experienced locks with Courtney at 6 and the "spare" 2 back row men on the bench.

So how about Api at number 8? Good ball carrier and offloading skills. We could really see the best of him.

Vickers saying Mourad saying computer says no on Samu coming back. Odd, there were reports he'd been released. But he's not on the bye-bye list. More poop than a slurry farm.

Good Shout Scrummy, Woody could move too, but I'm confident people will be high on Big Mitch when they get a good look at him.

Totally agree with saint Maul, we will be weaker in the pack versus last year, we do need a strong number 8.

Eadie or Tei or Woody all fine for prem 8 for a year. Then I follow Robby's lead and just get a kiwi.

Wood has played 8 for England. Holds his own well there. But whilst he's a capable carrier, his off the ball work is missed from when used at flanker, and that stuff is how Woody truly earns his chips. Would love to see Api at 8 experiment, only takes a run of games - as with Tei's break through

You beat me to it scrummy, we don't use hime enough and it would give a boost to pack weight with him at the back.

Every time I watched Mitch play for Bristol I was impressed, similar in styles to Moriarty, just aggressive in your face back row and carries well.

Agree with all that, but I believe Api will be used as a heavy weight big impact player at 50-60 minutes in, and we apparently have a new as yet unannounced 8 coming, don't know who and can't for life of me see why the club can't say anything.
Would love to seeApi have a go at 8. is it really that difficult?

Give Harrison the starting 8 shirt for the season, he's played well enough to deserve. We have plenty of cover and have academy players coming through for us to be ok in the back row this season without spending unnecessarily.

With a scrum going forward or at least maintaining parity it's a great position. If your pack is getting its Harris handed to them, it's terrible. Suppose that also seperates a decent 8 from a good one, the ability to pick and salvage something from the base when going backwards

I think people are forgetting how key a Number 8 is. You can't just chuck in Woody (who did a terrible 8 impression) or T (whose our best 7). Neither offer what we need in an 8 to balance the back row.

And Eadie can't just be the only 8 in our squad, you need two proper 8's minimum.

I think - whilst all the above is valid - you need to look at the 2018-19 season (and assume we have enough to find top 6 this)

1. Mitch is a class 8 (and wouldn't start at 6 ahead of others) - backups have all played prem/international #8
2. We'd be unlikely to play Courts out of position (it could harm his England chances)
3. DW decided our starting locks are Courts and Ribbans (close of last season) - he won't change that unless the losing streak continues (played all the top 4, lost vs all) - Patterson, Daisy, Craig will cover internationals / injuries
4. Api is an impact sub far more than a starter - this is good, we shouldn't mess (the only risk we take is our lineout falls apart if a lock goes off in the first 15mins or so.. Woody / Gibson should be able to work that out however)
5. We need cash post xmas 2017 for a lot of replacements.. overpaying now could be seen as rash unless it 100% solves a current shortage

Herbie and Lamont.. spot on. 8 is a specialist position and why Picamoles will be a big loss. Good 8's recover bad scrum situations, throwing someone in doesn't work if we want to have any success.

Yeah we heard all these excuses when people wanted to move Samu to 8.
It's almost as if professional rugby players can't learn new things isn't it?

+1 to the first sentence. I would be concerned if we don't have another option (other than Harrison) at 8 come the start of the season but would rather see us make a smart value signing than just throw a load of cash at it and hope it works.

Who do you suggest we should be bringing through at 8 then Robby?

I don't see a problem with eadie at 8 with t an alternative. However hope this doesn't mean t is seen as a replacement 8 rather than our first choice 7 which he should be. I also hope that the picamoles money is spent. Where... potentially a good gnarly prop is more pressing?

Long term, we need a replacement for Daisy, a proper one. That's where I'd be looking to spend my money, on someone who can lock out the scrum and run the lineout at a high level. It's a position that can win you a game.
If Saints are looking for an 8, then they can find as mentioned before 3 or 4 brilliant match winning options and as Woody isnt getting any younger and Mitch is so adaptable, there's a long term fix possible. Number 8 is a key position, course it is, but it's a lot more coachable/learnable than moving from outside centre to hooker, and Woody's got plenty between the ears, has worked really hard on his ball carrying and could do a job. But hey, what do I know? I want to play Nutters every week.

^^^ Ribbans. If ever there was a young man to mound into a new Daisy - it's him. We've discovered him, and the glimpses we've seen already show a mature, well rounded game plan. He's solid in the line-out, and crafty in maul defence. I for one hope we are having Daisy mentor him to take the reigns.

I'm led to believe Courts is mentoring Ribbans.

Like everyone I think he's a cracking talent with a lot of potential but he's another 2nd row/6 hybrid. We need an 19/20 stone lump to stick in behind Brookesy & anchor that scrum.

He is still a kid Robby only 21 weighing in at just over 18st, maybe he still has a bit more filling out to do, or we can hope smiling smiley

great talent, looking forward to seeing more of him.
