Hi Guys, new member...

This may seem an odd question, but how to the crowd come up with chants at FG? The only current chants being "when the saints" and "COYS". Who decides on a new one and how come saints only have those two? Sarries seem to have one for each player and many more. Although this seems ridiculous the only other one for saints I can remember was Samu Manoa. Is this a result of success, or is it just a saints thing?

Also, what are peoples thoughts on music playing at the ground during the game? Ie. After a try playing when the saints? I think certainly a little more would help build atmosphere especially if you have a dixieland band playing when the saints before each game.

Any thoughts?

There are more chants than the ones you mention but they may not be heard by the whole stadium so it could depend upon where you sit.

There have also been player specific chants e.g. Moooooj & Bruce, Bruce, Bruce. These are all "organic" probably just started by a few friends but gradually adopted by all. Trying to manufacture chants/atmosphere is likely to be very self defeating and Saints do not need to do it.

Re the music during the game - NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Hi Saintly,

That's interesting. I have only been following saints for 5 years or so, wasn't really around for the mooj, bruce days. I tend to sit in the corner of South and church's so I probably don't hear a lot of them. What are the other chants about?

Three immediately spring to mind:

Jimmies, Jimmies - usually in response to other teams 2 syllable chants

We all follow the Gold, Black and Green

We had the one for the ref as well, usually Tony Spreadbury
"My eyes are dim I cannot see, I have not brought my specs with me"

All harmless fun, beats the booing of the ref we tend to get these days

Saracens have a song for every player? Pull the other one! Nice people and what have you but I wouldnít suggest they have a long repertoire of songs. Maybe Sarries Sarries Sarries at different speeds?

Maybe because thereís only about 37 of them that I canít hear them? Or maybe because that Right Said Fred bloke singing on the PA drowns it out?

Great rugby team and all.... now if you said Clermont I would understand !

The only song I've ever heard Sarries supporters singing is "When the Saints go marching home". They may have a few chants but no songs!

Before their last visit I would I agree with you (saaaries saaaries....repeat) but the small noisy group in the South church corner certainly had a few a couple of weeks ago....
Oh Maro Itoge
One to the tune of yellow submarine...I believe it was for J George. Verse and chorus.
One Was to the Hey Jude chorus...(they seem to like the Beatles)

Any players who deserve a saints chant now?

Ok fine. There is a difference between a couple of handfuls of punters creating their own songs and Saracens having songs for each player which the fans sing.

Music of any sort during the game.........NO ! Gloucester tried this a few years ago and the crowd would not have anything to do with it....lasted about three games as I remember.

In the days of Courtney's big hits I used to hear "Courtney's gonna get you" quite often from the Gordon Terrace.

Thatís a beauty Ducks

There is no reason why songs canít be coordinated. I remember going to see Man Utd once in the Stretford End about 15 years ago. Anyone who has seen top 4 premiership football would know itís mainly a tourist sport apart from the home ends. They were trying to Ďbring back singing to the Stratford endí and handed out thousands of song sheets. Now, itís not Galatasary but at least it did start a movement and the stand became noisier.

The Gordon terrace all sing and have the various songs but itís only a couple or few hundred people. There is no reason why this couldnít permeate across the ground. This is where we could have a sole trumpeter in the terrace starting each one, then leaving supprters to continue it a la barmy army, Clermonts band etc

People sometimes do need to be led, and a little subtle encouragement can often go a long way. Subtle being the word.

Went to see Saints play in Toulouse a few years back and they seemed have it sorted, as I heard it:-

Too.........................................loo..........................................san

(one end of ground) (middle) (other end)

Certainly made the old nerves tingle.

Not sure how it could work at FG, unless the four stands in turn did Come..On..You..Saints.

Those in the Churches Stand might forget the words though*(Sm102)

Similarly "I'd rather wear a halo than a fez". I think the rather complex George North one is "...that bl**dy great winger from Wales".

We had one at the last game at the end of last season, I think.

And it was a success. They donít have to play the whole song just start it off.

Iím afraid we have to slowly nudge forward with the times. The ground doesnít have the natural febrile atmosphere it used to as tradition has been eroded over time. So it needs a nudge to get the placing noisy again.
