Formula for measuring your commitment to the Saints

Simon Hughes (the Analyst) in his fantastic book, Yakking around the World: a cricketer's quest for love and utopia, gave me an idea. Spending each English winter in a faraway cricketing country with a distinct mixture of success , he decided to create a formula to compare his experiences. He had a factor for People, Beaches, Cricket and then Catches (which, of course, meant female catches.

Nowadays so much rugby analysis is data based. There is a division of opinion on this site as to what constitutes a committed Saints supporter . So I decided to draw up a formula. After much thought, I left out a factor for positive posts on COYS or a minus factor for criticism. There's no room in my formula for the number of times a potential new signing has been sighted by you in the Weedon Road chippy, how many saints players of the 1960s taught you geography at school , the number of children you have named after members of the 2000 European champs or the number of times you've cried this season after a game.

I've kept my formula simple; it's

NUMBER OF GAMES WATCHED THIS YEAR (including Wandies but not pre-season)
+ MILES TRAVELLED FROM HOME TO AND FROM FIXTURES AT FRANKLINS GARDENS X YEARS SINCE FIRST SAINTS GAME.

I've manipulated the formula to hopefully beat my old schoolmate Chis Hoddle.

On that basis my figures are 15+ 240 x 56 = 14280 I think.

Please calculate your figure or offer your own formula.

I'm a little stunted here as I live 0.5 miles from the ground!

Pedant warning...

Based on how you've written your equation then the figure for you should be 13455

I'm going to assume you mean (15 + 240) X 56

So for myself I have (11 + 0.5) x 24 = 276 (going with the original equation it I would have had 23!)

(15 +240) x 56 it is. As one would expect ,the Durham University educated Simon Hughes did lay his formula out correctly. I was taught properly, but it was a look time ago.

Ted, I think you deserve an extra positive factor for your work on this site.

(9+44)x15=795
Does this mean I’m 3x as committed as Saint Ted but 18x less committed than twsaint?

It means you're a good sport for having a go.

Saint Ted, you do yourself an injustice, distance travelled to and from the ground =1.0 miles.

By "watched" do you mean attended, or does TV count?

For attended (0 + 250) x 29 = 7250.

Not in my formula but I know you're always there in spirit.

My score was 2400 (housebound so not been to any matches this year).

Does doing 10000 miles taking my youngest to Junior Saints Academy help at all?

I must say it is a relief to find that I am not a Saints supporter, as I can now stop worrying about our (their?) performances, stop watching BT and stop reading the board.

Really though - I don't think you choose who you support, you just suddenly realise that a team/club means something important to you. Sort of self-certification.

Unfortunately not, it's only just over 0.5 miles round trip!

Although this will be going up to a whopping 8 mile round trip as soon as my new house is finished!

(3 + 540) x 30 = 16,290

I feel the distance affect is too high. I would divide that variable by 5 or something.

That would put me on 0.1!

Think we need to multiply the end figure by pints consumed so I can get some descent numbers!

(976 + 2) x 33 = 32274. I knew travelling from Norway to watch Saints would one day offer something positive winking smiley

Games 'watched' (OK a couple of aways on bet 365) = 15 + 40 x 21 =1155

I am a bit concerned that two key elements haven't been included;

1/ Was you born within the sounds of Church's shoe clicker cutter, must be a multiple of 9
2/ How loudly do you shout when at the gardens decibels divided by pie x 6.

Was “pie” a Freudian slip or did you mean it?

Surely double points if you pronounce ‘our’ as ‘air’

I think I just sneak in on you
(12+300)x49=15288.

Fun idea that makes a good change! Expect you will be adding an extra game this evening that I shall be missing.

Can anyone beat (0+1012) x 36 = 36,432??

Long time supporter now living north of Inverness!

Not surprisingly I haven't been to FG for a while, although in some ways it would be easier/quicker than going to watch Glagow or Edinburgh!

And I was going to say you are not adding up the total miles Sir :-).

The original definition isn't clear as to whether it is the miles travelled PER GAME or total miles travelled in the season thus far.

If it was total miles travelled you would be in the thousands Chris! I live in South-East London, 2.5 hours in car but straight line is 180 miles there and back.

"MILES TRAVELLED FROM HOME TO AND FROM FIXTURES AT FRANKLINS GARDENS"

is this per game or in total?

well, on that model i score zero! No time to come and watch the games (but i do 'watch' on saints live when i can)

But i am 43 and have been a saints fan since the age of about 9 or 10, and i have 6 team shirts and my little one has 4 (need to stop him growing somehow!), so i guess that makes us fans??

So hows about, for each relegation you have supported the team through scores you 20k points, so that gives me 40k points as a starter!!

Or add the number of ND1 (as was) clubs visited as away supporter in 2007 relegation I only missed 2 Esher and launceston, technically Launceston doesn't count as there wasn't an actual game (waterlogged pitch) on that day If my memory serves they came as 'guests' to play Saints away fixture at FG for the payday? (good luck to them)

It's (9+110) x 14 for me, so I score 1666... Think Deesaint's criteria would bump my score up significantly!

How Saints actually measure your commitment...

(Beers drunk + pies eaten) x (merchandise purchased + ticket cost)

No?
Ok - I am obviously a fake fan!! 😉
