The Times are reporting that Paul Gustard took training yesterday.

I guess this is exactly the sort of thing that Jim wouldn't accept!

Gustard answers Saints SOS call

Great that we have got him in to help however the big challenge will be do we have the fitness to make a Gustard defence plan work? Our biggest defence problem has been fitness and desire to get back into position leading to holes/mismatches

Don't be surprised if things don't improve quickly. Learning new defensive structures will take time, there's no quick fix. We have the quality of players to do it but it'll take at least a pre-season to begin rebuilding. Really hoping we see our leaders and international step up.

Good to see, but, as the article says, very much an SOS call.

Unfortunately, one of the less positive effects of Jim's loyalty has been to hollow out the coaching team beneath him, particularly in terms of experience. Neither Dickens, Hopley or Dowse are established coaches yet, so with Jim's departure I'd imagine that we are seriously lacking a lot of basic know-how.

We are badly in need of an injection of basic competence, and it's going to be very hard to make improvements unless and until an experienced coach comes in with fresh eyes. Someone like Meyer would be great in the short term imo. He mightn't be flashy, but has a mountain of experience and would at least sort out the basics - i.e. scrum, defence, gameplan. In the meantime it seems its the kindness of strangers....

This is so common. Eddie Jones brought in Glen Ella as a consultant not because he isn't experienced or know what he is doing but because different people have different skill sets. I don't see this as anything other than a real positive.

I know Paul G coming in to assist has been referenced before but I also see this as a massive positive. It seems as though we need all the help we can get on that front and he is one of the best around.

Fingers crossed the players and coaches soak it all up and we start to see the benefit on the pitch.

if nothing else this shows that Alan is willing and open to external ideas/input which can only be a good thing

Is Gustard potential DoR or is he one of those who are better at specialist coaching and likely to remain so ?

Would be interesting if true, he would get to be a DOR at a prem club but misses the chance to lift a World Cup with Eddie and his 4 year plan, don't know if he would just leave halfway through? I think he would be good for the job though. He can mentor Hopely with defence & we get all the insights from how the England team culture has been created.
