Best fly half at the club?

Not just as a result of today's game but on looking at the season as a whole, Myler is still the best 10 at the club. Arguably the only specialist 10 at the club.

He has been a tremendous stalwart for the club. Criticised for not being able to take us to the very top level, but steered us very close to that top level.

When times are hard like they are we need to simplify things and use a more conservative game plan. I have every faith in Myler making the right decision, kicking field position and taking the 3 points each time they are on offer.

Myler to start against Quins on merit? He may very well have to depending on Francis.

granted Iím biased but I feel for Piers. Move countries, new setup and system. Broke his jaw start of the season then shoved into a team in free fall.

Stephen is a great pro, regardless of attacking limits, he will never let us down and added some calm today.

Heís also a saintsman, Iím afraid a large number of our guys are either Ďnot selflessí or pros earning their crust but not really saintsmen.

Someone needs to lead, show some pride in the shirt.

And the merry go round at 10 goes on. England obviously see something in Francis but where do Saints play him. Heís having a difficult time at 10 and has been disappointing. At 12 I donít think he fits Saints Ďgameplaní Id be surprised if Myler was here next season so is it worth persevering to force some form out? What is the greater good at the moment?

Honestly think we should keep him for another year, if he's good enough he's young enough. Would be great backup for next year & organised back well

I don't think we can judge piers by this season for the reasons HLTW said. As OP says Myler is the safe pair of hands who can guide a team round the park.

I really want piers to be a success but I suspect that Bigger, Francis, Horne will be our midfield combo next season and it looks pretty good to me.

As an aside - an interesting point made in commentary about the responsibilities of the tackler when colliding head to head. The way Roberts tackles is likely to end in head clashes. Is this any better than an accidental high challenge? Piers got smashed and had to be taken off. Luckily Groom was short enough to avoid the head on head collision.

Andy he has always played 12 for England and yes he had been disappointing, very... problem is with him. At 12 who you play 10? Mallinder would be best option for me? At least weíd play attacking rugby imho... butHarry didnít do himself proud today sadly.

In fact most of games he played for Blues was at 12, their 10s got injured and he stepped in and did a great job, he didnt actually play that many games for them.

Maybe premiership doesnít suit his style at 10, maybe he had a purple patch at 10 for Blues? Maybe playing on back foot doesnít suit him, it canít be easy! Maybe all of the above?

He has shown he has talent and hopefully we get to see more of it smiling smiley

Greenwood - do you think Myler would have made a difference if he'd played each of the last 13 games?

I struggle to think that Carter would have looked good in this team.

He has only started the last 3 games at 10..... and weíve been mullered up front in each of them

Hardly a large sample to judge someone by

A run of 10 games when we arenít being destroyed would probably give a fair reflection.

Love Myler, but since he's been at the club we've destroyed several other No. 10s & are in danger of doing the same to Francis

Don't get me wrong & credit to him for seeing off others, but this is another "loyalty" issue that's bitten us on the bum

We are trying to move on from Myler but are still playing by a game plan that suits Myler and 10 and Burrell at 12. Said gameplay does not suit Mallinder or Francis at 10 or 12. We are not playing to our players strengths.

Agreed, we've destroyed some 10s by not letting them play the game they want to play, we nearly destroyed Kahn, but when 'un-shakled' look what he's done at bath.

Francis is a talent, does he do well with a pack going backwards? No

Weirdly Mallinder seems to, I'd be tempted to go with him at 10 with Francis at 12, Ace at 15

You have to feel sorry for a lot of players that come to saints
PF is an attacking 10 he takes the ball to the line and looks to offload- there is nobody in support
We bring players in then ignore their strengths and try to squeeze them into the good old saints system
LP was another a great offloading 8 but no one on his shoulder to take the offload
Kahn F has his natural game beaten out of him and turned into a kicking 9
George N one of the greatest modern day wingers - we couldnít find a way of getting him into the game
I could go on

Itís not the players

Any 10 is going to struggle against an underpowered pack with no ball carriers giving us front foot football.
If you get a chance to look at highlights today look at the wave, after wave of hungry Quinnís carriers, all taking the ball at pace, all accelerating into the contact area with a team mate on his shoulder looking for an off load.

In contrast, the Saints were static, easy to put to the floor and woefull at the breakdown.

Sort out our defence and get a forwards coach whoís not sitting waiting for his payoff and we will start competing again.

Myler has seen off several 10ís. We didnít ruin them they were just exposed for what they were. Not one of them did anything of note after they left us.

Quite difficult for anyone else to "prove otherwise in a Saints shirt" if Myler's still wearing it.
Not that I have anything against Myler, the semantics of the statement amused me :-)

Ryan Lamb doing reasonably well at La Rochelle .. but I take your point.

Iíve no idea why people canít get their head around Myler being alright. He isnít amazing, he isnít terrible but he is marmite it seems.

Piers needs more game time at 10. Myler has had a fair crack why canít Piers get it?

I think Myler is a decent 10 and the best one we have in the squad. Piers looks more effective at 12 in the games I have seen him play which admittedly isn't that many. Distribution doesn't appear to be fantastic, particularly from left to right. But if he can keep from getting injured (jaw/concussion) why not? A string of 5 or 6 consecutive games should give us a fair idea of the type of player he is.

I like the marmite analogy

Oh loads .. a bit of a problem child by all accounts. But could play a bit when the mood took him and as mentioned doing okay at La Rochelle.

If Biggar is coming then Francis/Malinder are not destined to play 10, so use Myler. He played better than Francis and we need his accuracy with the boot.

SMyler comes ion for a lot of unfair criticism on here - whilst he may not be a mercurial fly-half in the Cipriani mould he has been consistent for many years. A lot on here seem to forget he was MoM in both the Amlin Cup and Premiership Finals. He put us into the right areas of the field where our forward game could dominate (oh for those days) and capitalise
Of all the 'out of contracts he is one I would re-sign (based on fact Biggar and Francis will be away during Internationals and we will be down to Grayson/Harry)

He has started 3 games at 10, one of them for only 25 mins..... behind a pack getting demlished. I am sure he looks fine in the England squad (and will be a 10/12 cover sub).

He is basically Farrell's backup.

I really don't believe this thread.

There is only one fly half in the squad today and that is SM.

We have three other members of the squad who may make premiership fly-halves, only time will tell. Piers, Harry and James G. Of those three, only James G is a fly-half to begin with. And yes, I am aware of Harry's roll in the U20s. But even there, he was make-shift, albeit very successful.

However, we have had years of vacillation and confusion from the coaching team when trying to find a back-up. They have been, frankly, appalling. I'm surprised SM hung around. I don't believe it was anything personal, just their inability to think and balance a squad rotation plan.

Next season, we have Dan Biggar coming. But as has already been pointed out, he will miss a high number of games, if healthy, playing for Wales. So we need a substitute. Why not SM? He can be our Charlie Hodgson for the next 2-3e years, can't he?

I have long been a fan of Smyler's, and I will repeat something I said back in the days of the Offy, when another similar thread was running - be careful what you wish for.
