Any news on when Brussow will land?
Ady32 17 January, 2018 11:04
I was thinking that the LV games would be ideal grounding for him and prepare him for the league. Does anyone know any more other than "in January"?

Saint Tim 17 January, 2018 11:15
He is here and training with the team (told that last weekend) but obviously not part of the European squad.

This has given me an idea for next weeks super fun poll...

May take a while to get up to speed - he's barely played a game in the last two years from what I can gather

If that 's true why have we signed him?

If he's as good as he's cracked up to be then he should go into a match day 23 as soon as he's fit enough.

He may not fit in with the new structure either or at least be better than the newly found brothers play?

Let's hope we get the chance to find out sooner rather than later, or the season will be long gone.

Thanks...So the LV cup is the ideal bedding in tournament.

Re: Any news on when Brussow will land?

I presume we signed him because we do not have a 7 at present
If Gafney is anything like Jones - both grounded in the ‘aussie’ ways - I would think he will be in the team fairly rapidly
We need a fetcher who is a serious pain at breakdown

His Japanese team have a relegation play off this Saturday, I thought he was contracted to them until the end of their season?

Re: Any news on when Brussow will land?
twsaint 17 January, 2018 14:02
He doesn't appear to have played for them since 2nd Sept.Wrench is somewhat wide of the mark but he will be definitely be rusty.

This is a bit like “will take Gaffney a while to make a difference, will take 2 years to rebuild”

Load of nonsense. He’s fit as a butchers dog and an elite world level back rower, much higher level than anyone we have in that position and across the league.

He walks into the team and is man of the match on a regular basis starting in 2 weeks or whenever it is.

Re: Any news on when Brussow will land?

There's fitness, there's match fitness and there's match sharpness. Can't speculate on how well simply training with a side in Japan brings you up on any of these scores. I have no doubt he will be in great shape as he has always been a good professional - just tempering my expectations in that i'm not expecting him to suddenly be playing 80 minutes on the regular straight away when I think he's played a combined 11 or so games in two seasons - 3 this year with the last well before Christmas.

Would be incredibly happy if you are proved right though Wolfie!

Whenever he's in the squad I'm looking forward to having someone that's an absolute nuisance at the breakdown. Hopefully, Ludlam will do this best impression of a sponge and soak up all his knowledge and experience with Gibson and Brussow starting for now.

Re: Any news on when Brussow will land?
Wilson Pickett 17 January, 2018 17:04
and to use boxing parlance, 2 relatively relaxing years in Japan means he has less miles on the clock.

preferable to 2 years constant super and international rugby getting bashed about

I wish I could rummage up the enthusiasm people have on here for a bloke, who whilst was once very good, has not played since September.

My innate curiosity asks a simple question - why has he not played? I believe the answer to that is that he was injured? So is he fully recovered now? And is he fit? In which case, if he is so good, why didn't the Japs pick him?

I hope he produces all the skills we have heard about. And quickly. I hope we see a master-class in breakdown disruption.

I just have this nagging feeling deep down............

Haven’t seen the stats on his appearances but look, my enthusiasm is all based on levels:-

Ackermann took sub par Lions squad to 2 super rugby finals. Therefore awesome coach and better than prem. Therefore Glaws top 4.

Gaffney coaches at all levels of the game. Taking over squad full of internationals. Therefore knows exactly what to do to turn good into excellent and average into good in a few weeks.

Brussouw one of the top 5 ever openside ball stealers. Ever. Only 31. Fresh. Therefore kicks butt against prem English sub international back rowers, various other journeyman not at his level etc. From my SA mates, he’s also a top bloke and team player, works hard in training etc. I predict he will be MoM 25% of the time at least and will hit ground running.

Re: Any news on when Brussow will land?
SaintSurrey 17 January, 2018 18:18
Don’t we usually put new players in the Wanderers for a season and then they move to a Welsh region because they can’t get a game?

Re: Any news on when Brussow will land?
Lamont4Saints 17 January, 2018 18:18
Was one of the best open sides in the world, he walks into the team for me if fit.

Getting players up to speed is BS.

No question mark over Ackermann. Top bloke, who is on his game.
No question mark over Gaffney. Top bloke who is on his game.

Broussow has not played this season. Why? Injured? OK, so is he fully recovered (not like George was!).

I also put a great deal into this on Jim's recent record on recruitment. With the exception of King Louis - who we could not hang on to - his signings have hardly been eye catching.

I hope you'e right and I am wrong. Just too much "previous" to trust in faith alone!

Re: Any news on when Brussow will land?

The man's a genius at what he does. When the Lions toured South Africa he was arguably the form 7 in the world. Ahead of even McCaw at that time.
Look at the impact George Smith had at Wasps. I expect the same from Brussow.

Re: Any news on when Brussow will land?
St Saltaire 17 January, 2018 18:50
Jim made some excellent signings - Horne, Francis, Ribbans, Gibson. I’m sure that some of the other players are also excellent and that we may now see them in the match day 23 rather than in the Wanderers.
The problem was not getting players it was getting the best out of them.

Just did a quick google. His wife’s a singer. He fancied a couple of years getting paid loads with relatively non-taxing rugby, as I’d guessed. Enjoyed chilled out couple of years. Who has the appearance stats for this season?

Looks like he last played for 40 odd minutes in September and has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a groin injury.

Thanks Brackley fresh as a daisy then! Albeit groin injury doesn’t sound ideal for jackaling...

Re: Any news on when Brussow will land?

Hopefully with the correct treatment and rehabilitation he will be fine for a couple of years, the only concern is he has suffered a similar injury before.

Re: Any news on when Brussow will land?
ch saint 17 January, 2018 21:51
i can't wait for him to start, assuming we don't have the stupid policy of recruiting then not picking.
I have just feasted on some of his youtube clips. According to Wiki he is 1 inch taller than Neil Back but almost 2 stone heavier and definitely faster.
At his time of life he has the opportunity to become one of our historic players in the way of Pagel, and Blowers
For those who are interested Gary is well and fit having sold his farm and moved to a new farm quite close to Port Alfred, (somewhere that is less out in the sticks).

BS that's been used plenty of times at Saints when it comes to signings I might add. Just get him fit and get him in.

Exactly. too much negative thinking and reduced expectations. Best way to get him integrated is to play him asap.

Can we all agree to just get behind the guy, trust the club get him integrated and match fit asap, we welcome him properly to the Gardens in the team colours... and then judge the decision?! Sounds simple, but feels beyond a few people posting!

Well perhaps you would care to share some or all this data rather than just fire off a very dismissive yet uninformative reply? That way, we could all have the opportunity to educate ourselves.

Go to agree with this. Is he a quality player ? Without doubt, is he match fit ? Who knows. I am willing to give him a chance to find his feet and trust the Gaffer lets his loose when the time is right.

Absolutely! We don't know if we'll get the Brussow of yesteryear or somebody less impressive, but he'll be a Saints player and should have our full support. Fingers crossed he makes a great impact.

Yeah go on,
Last season the dullards on here poured scorn on a comment I made about Nic Groom needing time to bed in and learn the systems.
So look at his numbers & performances from the 1st six games of last season and the last six games of the season.

By the way, I'm not here to educate you or anyone else, if you watch games once & then come on here & say Player X is rubbish/amazing that's fine, but don't be surprised if someone disagrees with you actual evidence in the form of statistics.

I've seen players score 4 tries in a game and still have actually had really poor games. So have you, & people still think he should play for England...

...and still people will disagree because they can't admit when they're wrong.

Thank you Robbie, I appreciate your taking the time to respond. So I should do the same.

If you have a beef with an individual, might I suggest you deal directly rather than making scatter gun comments that could apply to anyone?

So you still harbour a degree of angst because some people "poured scorn on you". Well I think you need to get a thicker skin! The world is full of those naysayers, so why should this little snap shot of life, be any different?

We all have our favourites for the national jersey. Is it so hard to accept that some people may not have such an educated view of the player - and of the world - as you? After all, we are all different.

Education - as you rightly say, you are not here to educate. But then your way of presenting your thoughts does not always attract those of a "lighter" constitution, does it? You are no different to one or two others on here who seems to mistake opinion for fact. In your case your opinions may well be fact, but not all are able to call on such knowledge and involvement. They only have what they see before them.

And as for admitting mistakes, I find that to be an age thing. As I have got older, I tend to be far more willing to own up to mistakes I make. But that is just me. I wonder, however, if you could not also be included in that group?

Do keep up the arguments. Do keep up the technical analysis stuff. But please lighten up?

Re: Any news on when Brussow will land?
Robby Richmond 19 January, 2018 19:35
If, as you infer, I am mistaking opinion for fact longers, then I would be far, far, far more vociferous than I currently am. Unfortunately the only way to get a conversation or discussion these days, both here or on most forms of social media is to behave (or at allow it to be perceived as) in a truculent manner.

I don't mistake opinion for fact, I do however, have little tolerance and do not wish to mansplain things to anybody who might realise they're are barking up the wrong tree if only they'd given it a wider perspective.

I'm afraid I do have little patience these days especially when in the past I have explained things in a wide context with evidence and then people have simply replied 'nah'.

If that comes across as crass, rude or vulgar, well... *shrugs*

No, not rude. Not crass. Not vulgar.

But it does certainly suggest you need to take a step back and ask yourself the context of all this. The world is full of idiots - you may include me in that broad statement, but it doesn't matter - and so it is only to be expected that a few rock up on here.

If your patience is tested by the low intellect comments on here, and the responses to your answers, take some time off.
If the problem is social media, then I have no hope for you. It's only going to get worse!!

Have a good weekend.
