Gaffney says on recruitment 'Not too many spots to fill'

Link to article where Gaffney discusses how recruitment is working (or not working depending on your perspective)

The sentence that seems most revealing, if not reassuring, is, 'We haven't got unlimited money at this moment in time, there's not too many spots to fill but we're just hoping we can fill them in the near future.'

I think another 4 or 5 will come in.

Brooke's is the first too announce he is going, but there are a few others contracts coming up that I don't think will be renewed.

But we will see.

Players may have been signed but not announced.

That may indicate few will be leaving or more are in contract than thought. If we are using all of the cap which I assume we are, we can only replace those that are leaving.

As mentioned in other threads, our squad is rather large with a number of experienced players spending most of their time playing in the Wanderers. So perhaps some leavers will not be replaced.

You get extra money for fielding 70% average in the matchday squad over the course of a season

Hence that time we thrashed Wasps at the end of one season - they were trying to up their percentage. Ditto Sale at one time too I think?

I think Newcastle fielded an entirely English side once?

I assume it will make for less positive reading than the last decade or so given we are still paying off the new stand, we've seen a steep decline in attendance, we had to buy Jim out of contract and hire Gaffney + Boyd.

Hence we have seen us unload some of our more expensive assets in North and Brookes.

Isn't the year end something like end of April or May? If so then surely the costs for Mr Boyd would go into 2018/19 and wouldn't the reduction of the loan be a balance sheet item with only the interest appearing on the P&L?

Little things I appreciate, but I would expect a hefty increase in season ticket prices in the next year or so.

Depends what Saints share of the monies from Lionel Ritchie is I guess.

Regardless of where costs sit on a P&L we will have limited spending power over the next few seasons if we want to keep healthy finances, unless we raise ticket prices sharply as you suggest or run at a deficit for x seasons.

One thing we know is that the rugby is great then the fans will come.

I read above that we can expect a hike in season ticket/ticket prices. This seems to make the assumption that people will pay those prices. They can only charge what the market will bear and I suggest we have reached that point already.

Bit of a chicken and egg situation, can charge more for a better product, but need the money to produce the product. The billionaire would of course be the solution.

The asset value of the club has gone up substantially during ownership, increasing the owners net worth. Great trade.

However the poor supporters will probably have to be sucked dry year on year to fill the financial shortfall, thereby preserving the asset value.

Boyd is not coming until Aug. Gaffer says the existing coaches are in charge of recruitment. Some of us think our problems are down to coaching over an extended period. Some think we will be top four next year. Am I just a grumpy old git for thinking all is not well?

Yes, not only did the speak with Rob Horne - and why not - they also spoke with Adam Ashley Cooper. Makes perfect sense.

I have to say, irrespective of why he's here, he is very easy to listen to and brings a great deal of information into the open.

I like him and I hope it continues this way under Boyd.

Because making a profit or striving too would be at best a secondary consideration. The skyís the limit in terms of marquee players too

When you look at how Exeter spend their money and we spend ours it might be more to do with what you do with the money you have rather than just the amount.
