Rotimi Segun on for Sarries - formerly of this parish I believe? on for Earle, two butchered tries and a knock-on compounded by giving up on the chase leading to Tiggers 4th try.

Segun's Prem debut.

Good performance by Tigers, especially their pack

Sarries were terrible. Perhaps they would like West to help with their rather poor scrum. They were not helped by injuries to Clark and his replacement before the 30 minute mark. Tigers were better though with a full team out, Sarries would have done much better.

Yes he was Shendy, family live in Brixworth. He left our academy officially to concentrate on his Uni studies at Loughborough and played for the students in N1 or 2 but seemed to be picked up by Sarries fairly quickly. Something obviously didnít suit him at Saints

Something to do with us wanting him to go to Moulton College and him wanting to go to Loughborough. Sarries were happy to support him at Loughborough, we werenít. Or so I heard.

If that's true it does seem a rather shallow reason for losing a player - perhaps lessons might be learnt ?

Not quite right - it was at 18 years old (Moulton is 16-18), he was offered a full time senior academy contract but the lad and family wanted him to go to Loughborough to begin his university studies. Saints wanted him to be full time at the club and so both parties went their own way.

As you say, Sarries signed him up pretty much immediately at that point.

Equally as poor imho. Rugby has prided itself in setting people up with further education over sports like football, not so much if clubs dictating what players can do ( different if in terms of gulfs in geography etc but in terms of uni or not seems poor form).

There is another Segun brother in the pipeline too, isnít there? Or has he followed Rotimi out of the Shire to the North London Darklands?

What an odd weekend of league results, so many close matches and/or unexpected results. The margins are so small, though itís frustrating still to be on the wrong side obviously.

Thatís dreadful if true. Lad should be encouraged to study and earn some qualifications. No guarantees in professional sport for lots of reasons sohave totgink linger term. Loughborough is not a million miles away and seems daft an arrangement couldnít have been made

Yeah thought they were twins. Used to train at Virgin in the evenings. Watched them on the back fields both pretty handy. our group were frustrated to lose them. Even more so if the reasons stated are correct

Didn't I read on here that back in the time of Wayne Smith, the club used to encourage getting qualifications? Didn't James Cannon spend time getting a degree at Nottingham University while at the Saints?

Will Harries had a similar argument with Saints during his time at Loughboro. Apparently, trying to persuade him to extend the timescale of his degree so that he would be able to spend more time in N'ton. I notice he's now playing for Ealing in ND1. Why oh why are Saints so averse to kids choosing their own brand of education??? No way would the Saints allow the likes of Amos, the Dragons full back, study to become a doctor.

Unfortunately you are a little ill informed.

Nothing too do with the Club.

The older Segun was offered a contract, but him and his father turned it down too focus on Education.
The father had made that apparent to Saints for years that they believe education is more important. Which is totally fair enough.

2nd year in to Uni Sarries approached with a rather large offer and they accepted it.

Not saints being against education, i think Harry is still studying.

So, not being cynical, the "rather large offer" clinched the sporting aspect ?

Harry is studying part time - Rotimi, full time.

Thatís the difference.

The family asked Saints to allow him to undertake full time study and to find a way to make that arrangement work but an agreement could not be reached. Saracens by contrast accepted the full time study approach.

Iím not being critical of any parties - thatís for others to judge. I can see both sides of the argument.

If heís deemed good enough you find a way. Perhaps he wasnít deemed sufficiently good enough for the Saints to compromise.

Given how little they actually play you would have thought it would be easy to loan out to Students in N2 and keep tabs on his conditioning. Only needs a call or video link with Loughborough conditioning guys a couple of times a week. All sounds a bit odd to me

No, Saints were uncompromising and naive. Part of the cavalier arrogant approach that has led us to where we are today.

How many great players have combined studies with the professional game? How can you expect an Individual to give up their future for a career that may last a couple of years.

Tosin Segun is playing in the second team at Cambridge RFC.
