Alex Coles, Samson Ma'asi, Joe Wallace, Connor Tupai, Ollie Sleightholme have all been taken on for next year's Senior Academy.

Some serious pedigree there.

Good luck to them all.

Does rugby produce more next generation players than other sports?

Certainly more than football.

Cricket is probably close.

Can't compare with racehorses though - their mums and dads were all in the game.

not sure it is nepotism because itís a competitive sport

There are certain physical attributes necessary to compete which are of course genetic, plus a smaller sport than many others re competitive pro market.... in NZ itís a religion so pretty much all the family members will have played

Barry John failed to produce any atars but his sister produced the Quinnells, does that count?

Wouldn't say nepotism, the old boy network is still rife.

2 years ago we took on 6...Grayson, Emery, Trinder, Painter, Rayment and Devante Onojaife.

Last year they took on 2.

Apparently they didn't have enough money too take on anymore.

One of my sons played alongside Connor and always spoke highly of him as a cheeky scrum half not afraid to boss his own forwards with even a word or two of advice for the opposition.

So which current pros get game time because of their connections instead of ability ?

I just canít see it makes a difference at the top level.

Toops has played 12 for a couple of seasons now for school and U18. Long term probably 12 or maybe 10.

I think itís more about the path to that top level being easier if you have a famous surname and/or go the right school. They have a number of incremental advantages.

Itís not to say they are poor players just that there are other players who donít get the same access to opportunities but are potentially as good if not better.

Itís hard to quantify that but youíll usually find at least one or two Ďcontendersí in any local clubhouse at the weekend.

At the younger age groups public schoolboys dominate disproportionately as the regional coaching is largely done by private school coaches with an eye on their careers and the school prospectus. However if you are a son of a famous father to boot that seems to trump everything. When my son played for the Midlands which is regarded as an England trial we had to fill in forms declaring if I'd ever played top level. Sure enough this info found its way into all match reports whether the player had done anything of note. When he went professional the split between public and comprehensive was far more egalitarian as the influence of the schoolmasters had diminished. I'm pretty sure that some former players use their network to secure contracts for their offspring. Classic example of this would be Ford the elder.

It would be totally natural for children of professional sportsmen and sportswomen to receive a very early introduction to their sport and probably be coached in the finer arts some years before their peers so they grow up with an advantage that would naturally lead to early participation, plus the inherited genes would make them slightly more likely to succeed
