Wanderers name side for Tigers derby at the Gardens
Friday, April 19 2019.
Northampton Wanderers have made six changes to their line-up as they bid to secure a spot in the semi-finals of the Premiership Rugby Shield on Saturday.
East Midlands rivals Leicester Tigers are the visitors at Franklin’s Gardens, with the men in Black, Green and Gold hoping to book their spot in the final four of the competition for the fourth straight season.

Following an impressive six-try 40-36 victory over Northern Conference leaders Newcastle Falcons last time out, Northampton need just one league point from the match to guarantee their progress.

Ken Pisi and Connor Tupai both come into the back-line for Wandies, while Andrew Kellaway – a hat-trick hero against Newcastle – is once again named in the midfield alongside Fraser Strachan.

Fly-half James Grayson skippers the side for the third straight match, but coaches Simon Sinclair and Mark Hopley have shuffled their pack with Toby Trinder, Karl Garside, and Lewis Bean all coming into the tight five and Alex Coles starting at lock.

Telusa Veainu - there's something on the Tigers board about him being back. Is that the Veainu who was fairly lethal a couple of years ago?

In the first half Wanderers struggled to hold the Tigers pack and gave them too many scrums because of unforced errors. In the second half the Wanderers cut down on the handling errors, avoided too many forward confrontations, upped the pace and off-loading to the extent that Leicester couldn't live with them at times.

We had another look at what we will be missing from Kellaway next season - shame he's leaving. Grayson kicked well but too often tried to beat Leicester on his own.

The officials seemed to make as many errors as the players

I wasn’t at the game but it sounds like another stellar performance from AK. I think the only consolation in losing him was from a post I saw earlier in the week that maybe this was always intended as a gap year for him and maybe the flip side of when TC and Rory went down under for a while in Oz. Manly I think.

It was Stephenson and TC that went down under

A really good Wandies crowd seeing it was a 1pm KO. Second half was better than the first & the "guests" did really well again

Agree Tedge that this (& the last Wandies game) showed that if we could have kept hold of Kellaway what a star he could have become for us - you can see the class

There is always the possibility that he wanted to go home after a year, and no contract would have tempted him. Or perhaps Waratahs only allowed him to leave under the condition that it was only for 1 year.

I thought he went well. A big unit for his age, and certainly likes contact!

Uru's try was a beauty. Power, skill and pace.

There was a fanastic try which was effectively a 14 point turnaround. Tom Collins chased back in defence, fell on the ball , got up and kept it alive. The ball was switched to the right deep in our 22 and in no time we were scoring in the left hand corner. The support running was brilliant.

Tigers had 6 full internationals in their squad to our one , although they had plenty of guests and youngsters. Our scrum took a bit of a pounding but the boys battled really well for the result.

Exeter or Sarries away in the semi final might be a bridge too far for this young team, but they've done really well.

A certain irony that they had Campesi Ma'afu and Ross McMillan in their front row !

I think Gaston Cortes did the damage. His first game back after a lengthy injury.

Campo and Ross won't fit into our squad, just the same as they've been little use to Tigers' first team.

Yeah... he seemed very quick!

Not sure if it was the initial playsthat put him into decent space but he finished well.
