H's Dad...
England Pedants? Naah... England Imbeciles is better...
Specfically referring to the two poor lost souls (Haskell and Robshaw) who asked the ref what they should do about the italian's infamous ingenious ploy of not competing at the tackle area and, of course, the more genral complete absence of a 'plan B' in England Rugby for a generation....(Sm13)

Ah, now this is a pet peeve of mine (to drag the thread further off topic...)

Haskell and Hartley weren't asking what the breakdown law were; they were asking how the referee was interpreting them, and what "picture" he wanted them to give at ruck time. In a few of the rucks where the Italians were "legitimately" on England's side, the English player in the ruck had grabbed a nearby Italian player to force him to become part of the ruck.

England's tactics were arguably correct, because a player does not need to be actively competing for the ball in order to be part of the ruck - the wording in the laws is very unclear about whether an inactive player being held by an opposing player is considered to be forming part of the ruck (the law around what constitutes a ruck: "the ruck is a phase of play where one or more players from each team, who are on their feet, in physical contact, close around the ball on the ground".)

England were asking for clarification on this, and whether Poite was only calling a ruck when an Italian player was actively competing, or whether the inactive Italian players nearby the tackle could be forming a ruck if an England player dragged them in.

For my money, Poite refereed the tackle area incredibly badly - he was unclear when he was calling ruck, he often verbally contradicted his hand signals, and there was no consistency at all to his calls - England were right to ask in what manner he was interpreting the laws.

Haskell and Hartley were seriously unfairly mocked because of what was a pretty reasonable question answered in a flippant way by Poite.
