Saracens On This Day – 9th September
9th September 1995 – Leicester Tigers 31 Saracens 3

Another day with only one fixture in my list, but this one is not one to dwell on…
Saracens first game since promotion back to Courage League National 1 was always going to be a challenge, especially heading to the previous year’s champions - unbeaten at home for over a season.

Tigers scored 3 tries from wingers Steve Hackney and Rory Underwood as well as Outside Centre Ritchie Robinson. Plus 16 points kicked by full back John Liley. Andy Tunningley scored Saracens only response in what must have been a bump back to earth for a Saracens side that had easily won the second division the season before. But this was the reality of the two sides at the time - this was Saracens’ 17th trip to Welford Road, and the 17th without a win. It would be another 15 years before we would win our first game there at the 33rd attempt!

Leicester would go on to second in the league, pipped by Bath. While Saracens would lose all but one of their away league games that season, only beating the hopeless West Hartlepool to secure 9th place in a league of 10.
