"Where it went wrong was at the breakdown" - i've rewatched the entire game, and i'm pretty sure that it didn't all go wrong at the breakdown. It went wrong because Scotland played better than England in practically every aspect of the game. They were quicker to the breakdown, but they also beat England for aggression and physicality - they even beat us at counter-rucking which would normally require size more than it requires speed. They used turnover ball brilliantly (hey - what absolute geniuses, let's not hoof it away the minute we get turnover), they were bold and skilful. They played smart in the final quarter - turning the speedometer down a bit. They got on the right side of the ref because they knew Nigel likes a game to flow.

I think that's why Eddie is so rattled. If it was purely a speed to the breakdown thing, he could probably fix it by starting with Underhill and putting one of the 3 second-rows on the bench.

Also, wasn't it the case that England's backs were supposed to attack the breakdown like back-row players, negating the need for a specialist 7?

But .... 2 weeks' of relative rest could do them wonders, and England might yet win well in Paris. Personally, I think Eddie has to stick with the majority of his team for this game, and then get braver with his selections immediately thereafter. For me, his unarguable RWC19 starters are only: Mako, Itoje (though not on his 6Ns form), Launchbury, Billy, Faz, Watson. That's way too few at this stage.
