Northampton has suddenly become a huge game for us now, what with us needing to win and Saints on the verge of a play off place. Slightly concerning is our recent form, haven’t looked great in recent weeks. It may be due to qualifying so early, but I think you need to be showing some form before such a big game. Also a slight worry for me is how often we don’t perform too well after a break, some guys won’t have played for 3 weeks. I think we need to up our game as fans too, let’s get the park rocking and get the boys through!

Really need to step up, seems that the contenders have, but we are sliding. Not confident at all.

I have said I'm concerned about playing saints in two weeks and possibly again in 3.
They are on fire and definitely have momentum.
I'd like to think a full strength Chiefs will have enough to see us over the line but I'm really not confident.
We have a lot of work to do..... Getting our Mojo back ain't gonna happen overnight.
Let's hope RB and the coaches work the boys hard and get them mentally right

How about you let us beat you 20-21?
That way you can have 4 unconverted tries, we'll just score penalties,. You'll get the 2 points you need, we'll get the win we need and we can have a proper match in the playoffs. smiling smiley

I would settle for that tbh.

Nice idea, but I'm pretty sure that if that happened we would be hosting Glaws in the semi. If we want to stay top we need a win. Unless I've misunderstood the way league position is calculated, in which case I'm sure someone will be along in a minute to correct me.

The 2 points you would get from that score would guarantee 1st place for you and the 4 points Saints would get would guarantee 4th place for them - so no you would not be hosting Glaws in that scenario.

I dare to say that yesterday's loss was probably just what was needed before the Northampton game. We now need to win to be sure of first place and the "easier" semi-final. Had we won or lost narrowly yesterday we could have gone into the Northampton game with nothing riding on it and slipped to another narrow win or more likely close defeat.

I agree with those who say that we have to play the first choice team against Northampton though I might pick Cuthbert ahead of Olly Woodburn just for more game time and Bodilly at full back as he deserves the chance after yesterday.

Sorry I don’t agree with this “easier” semi final lark, I’ve seen a lot of them this year and Glos are no better than Saint or Quins. It’s just the media has a thing about saint Cips. You see his long pass by other teams and they don’t go overboard with praise. He’s good but not a league winning component. Yes they beat us in terrible conditions, but we let ourselves down that day.

Whilst I agree about Ciprianis deification being somewhat premature I do think Glaws are better suited to giving either Chiefs or Sarries an upset because they have a pack that will match up better.

Saints are playing wonderful rugby but they were a month ago too when they lost to Sarries precisely because their forwards couldn't give them parity or a platform. I think they'd have the same issue against Chiefs. To a lesser or greater extent the same is true of Quins and Sale too.

Quite right. My humble apologies to those I contradicted, including Hughville on the other thread.

Well we seem to have been written off by all media, Saints etc. You would think we'd done nothing all season and just appeared at the top with no merit.
With luck we won't have shoelace gate, against Saints like a while back when every two minutes and every set piece player laces needed attention. We've already played Wasps and Quins who must have written the book on gamesmanship and how to break up games by time wasting time, taking the knee and suddenly be fit as a fiddle when questioned by the ref.

I have a lot of Respect for Saints lets hope they come to play in the right spirit, and not try and win by any means as their predecessors.

Although you say you have respect for saints I think you are being quite disrespectful to saints in your comments. Where do you get that Saints have written you off? I think if you look carefully Saints fans and Chris Boyd have the highest regards for Exeter and their achievements and I think I could say that if Exeter reach the final then the majority of saints fans would be backing them no matter the opponents.
Additionally your comment about hoping they come to play in the right spirit and comparing them to others who you have blasted basically as cheats, I’d love to know when Saints have ever come to Sandy park and did otherwise but play in the right spirit because personally I can’t remember such an occasion.

Exeter have got to the top on merit and have continually improved since I remember watching them as a neutral in the 2nd leg against Bristol when promoted, a few end of season games lost does not make them less than they really are.

Its all about peaking at the right time. I think we've learnt a lot over the last 2 years about squad management so the Saints game will be the test.

John, I should have worded the previous post better with regards to Saints, we have had a great time with the Saintly folk since way back when you visited us in the championship and beat us in the cup etc.
I have stood through two matches at home where every trick in the book has been used until the referee started taking notice, but even then one said he could do nothing. It wasn't in the spirit of the game just a tactic to try and knock the opponent off plan. in this case it did, but it is gamesmanship, as no rugby was being played.
I have no complaints about losing to Sarries as they won fair and square, just played at pace etc, well done to them.
Maybe we are still naïve mentally in respect of keeping our eyes on the plan, no matter what tactics are used.

TBH Saints like to play a high tempo game keeping the ball in play - I don’t think you will have any worry about gamesmanship from us. One of the things I’m looking out for is how our scrum fares this time after spending most of the last game staring up our own backsides. We seem to have reduced the penalty count on oppo put in of late

The key to the way Saints play at the moment is scoring a lot of tries with some expansive attacking rugby. However, this does not always work against a team with a really well drilled set of forwards ( lets face it, they are all big ! ) who can play the referee and milk penalties to their hearts content. That being said, Saints pack is getting more solid game by game and some referees, though not all, are becoming far more reluctant to give a penalty call when the ball is there to be played. We know that the Chiefs rolling maul can be devastating on the back of a good line out, so Saints will be looking to minimize the penalty count and the boot into the corner. The permutations are such that Chiefs may well need at least a draw to retain top spot whilst Saints could lose and still make fourth as Quins have a tough trip to Pests who are still seeking top six. In all honesty, I think that top four is a step too far for us at the moment but the team will come to Sandy Park to give it a real go on the basis of nothing to lose. Strong rumours that Dylan may play a part although I would be surprised if he were to start but a bit of nous at the end could be important. I don't think you will see too many shoe laces being repeatedly tied or forwards on their knees for a blow - not our style, Chris Boyd is not a Dai Young or Dean Richards !
