Stade Francais Preview - Dead Rubber or Dead Wrong?
By Malco
January 14 2010
I don't mind admitting that I'm not quite sure where to start with this preview. At the beginning of the season this was one of the stand-out matches, one of the games that you would earmark as a potential great. I mean, these two teams would be battling for the top spot and would be both soaring high in their respective leagues and playing brilliant attacking rugby, wouldn't they?
Instead, I hope you won't mind me admitting that I'm finding it hard to raise much enthusiasm. In fact, this game has gone from being one that I couldn't wait for to one that I couldn't be bothered to buy a ticket for. I know, I know, we play for pride and glory. Sadly, the way I see it, the result here is completely immaterial. If we lose 30-0 I won't be heartbroken. If we somehow win 30-0 I'll be pretty chuffed, but the fact remains that this is completely arbitrary and the next match that really matters now is at London Irish on Valentine's day.

Ahead of this game the big question is what sort of team will we put out? Having had an extra week's rest, courtesy of last week's postponement, there is a strong argument for playing the full side, going for that guts and glory performance, doing everything we can to maintain our fine start to 2010. Keep the momentum going.

However, I think that practicalities should come into play. We are out of this competition and we are still a long way from being guaranteed Premiership rugby next season, let alone another Heineken Cup place. We would look pretty ridiculous if we were to play a full strength side and then suffer a critical injury or two.

Obviously the path we take will go a long way to determining the performance and the result. I hope that we use the game to give some game time to a few of our richly deserving squad players, and if this happens I hope they seize the opportunity to prove themselves and to give the coaching team a few extra selection headaches. If we do go down this road I expect us to be soundly beaten.

I suspect that we won't be doing this. I suspect we will play pretty much a first-choice side. I'm sure that Steve Meehan will be desperate to put one over his former employers and will, with some justification, state that we need to build on the momentum that we have established in the last few weeks and keep our best players battle hardened and hungry. The squad players will have to wait for the cup games Leicester and Sale.

Meanwhile, Stade Francais will be pulling no punches. Stung by the Dupuy affair and some pretty average performances this season, but with both eyes firmly set on Heineken Cup glory, they will be looking for nothing less than a convincing victory and hoping that we will save our glory performance for Ulster next week.

It's very, very rare for me to predict a defeat for Bath in any rugby match, but I really don't see us winning this game. We are literally in a no-win position two days before the game has taken place.

I now look forward to an inspired performance from the team and spending the weekend feasting on sweet humble pie.

"In fact, this game has gone from being one that I couldn't wait for to one that I couldn't be bothered to buy a ticket for. "

I totally agree Malco, while I bought a ticket in the end I decided not to buy them for the rest of the family, and I'll take a view on the day whether to leave the wife and kids on the Champs Elysée to come to the game or to do something touristy. I really can't get excited about this one - as

I agree, it's a dead rubber. Still I think we should put out a strong side, at least to reward those who have bought tickets for this meaningless game with a decent spectacle, and even a possible win. Why not put out a second team against Ulster, another meaningless game, but one which most won't have paid hundreds of pounds to go to see?

However there will be probably in excess of 10000 Bath supporters watching the Ulster match compared with a few hundred going to Paris.

Smee has said on the Offy that he fully respects the Heineken Cup and will therefore put out a very strong team.

I have lost some interest in Europe now although I shall be watching the game as it is on the red button on Sky. I hope we win though feel it does not matter either way and just hope we put all our effort into the GP now.

my glass is half full coz I drank it

I would rest Classens, Watson and Salvi. We have bigger fish to fry later. I went to Belfast what a rotten night! I fully expected to be in Paris. I am indifferent to this game now. I was also in Toulouse where we lost with pride ,the oppossite to Belfast. We need to get out of this game that which will help the rest of the season. Keep the core of the team together but dont overwork our stars.

"Rest" Watson, Claassens and Salvi? On that basis you would not have them playing any rugby between 2 January and 14 February. They need to play a bit.

rugby john - you havn't thought it through - apart from the fact that most of the players would want to play at Stade,
Meehan will want to put on his 'best' showing for his former Club.

Malco, whilst respecting your honesty, stranger things have happened and I'd never write off a match before the players have even got on the plane!(Sm102)

Annie, I don't doubt that they can win the match. I doubt the mental state of the players who understand that, even if they do win, there is no possible benefit.

The thread is about Stade Francais! Bring them back to play with Butch and O.B. The Guinness Premiership and survival first then qualify for next seasons Heineken Cup. We flogged Butch to death, where did that get us? Forget the sentimentle stuff, get focussed on the important issues. That is what winners do. Browne,Bemand and Ovens need some game time!

This is a huge game for us. The players need to show that the first half of the season is not what Bath Rugby is about. This is our stage and beating French teams in their backyard is what we do.

Got to keep the upward momentum going and that means a strong team going for the jugular. Grrrrr-woof

I think you have to put your first choice team out for the first 60 atleast to keep the match fitness up after the winter break, and to clear the cobwebs in terms of partnerships etc. try and get the little pops and offloads going again!

With four matches to play before the Premiership restarts I'd say it is essential to keep up the winning momentum, and beating SF on their own patch will be the evidence we need to show that the corner has been well and truly turned and left fading in the rear view mirror. The best team available playing the best rugby they can will be the requirement for tomorrow. I imagine that the boys are far better motivated than Malco!

I'd rest Watson and Claassens. Watson because he's been playing for us, WP and Stormers in an unbroken season. Claassens because we need our captain fit and focussed for the final half of the season. Bemand's played well I think when he's featured and he'll be playing against their third choice no.9 most likely. I'd also say to Davis, "here's your chance, go out there and play" - no pressure and see if he can get some good confidence in the bank (we may well need him again before the season's out). So I'd start Ryan above Nicky Little. Finally, I'd hand the captaincy to Mr. Grewcock and instruct him to get out there in the face of the referee and the oposition and generally make a nuisance of himself.

Playing strong team for 60 mins is important. Smee will then decide who to leave on for final 20 depending on how we are doing.

Irony is that with the pressure off, this is a fixture in which we might start to express ourselves more & pull off something special.

Ulster demolished Edinburgh last night.
Only comment on BBC Sports news was that "Stade were playing Bath today so they would be on top again by the evening"!
