Cardiff Blues And The Season Ahead - The Centres

By Craig Muncey
July 25 2018

The second instalment looks at the Cardiff Blues lined up to play this upcoming season. There is decent strength in depth in this area when all available, so who will be the first choice pairing and the contenders? Here are my thoughts.

The Centres

Rey Leelo

The Samoan international is a fine player. Maybe did not reach the standards last season of the season before, but there is no doubting his ability. Can make a break from seemingly nothing and is a good defender. I expect a big season from him this year.

Willis Halaholo

Willis and Rey will certainly start the season as the first choice midfield. Both can create openings individually and both good defenders. Like to see them both improve their passing abilities to each other as a combination, so they can offload to free each other, and also in passing the ball out wide to their teammates, but they are both genuine try threats.

Garyn Smith

Always been a fan of this player. An intelligent rugby player who runs intelligent lines in attack but in defence is where he really excels. Technically is a very good defender who rarely misses a tackle. His more than capable player when required this upcoming season.

Jack Roberts

We are still waiting to see Jack get game time due to the spate of injuries he has suffered since joining from Leicester Tigers. Was well thought of at Leicester and looked a really good acquisition last summer. Is not expected to be fit until October, but hopefully he then can play the rest of the season injury free and we get to see him play.

Harri Millard

A young man midfielder with promise who has shown up well at Welsh age-level groups. Has a good turn of pace and would expect him to play for the Cardiff Blues U23 side this upcoming season.

Max Llewellyn

A tall rangy centre who the few times I have seen him play has impressed me. Still very young but has good football skills and look forward to seeing how he progresses.

Cameron Lewis

A hard-running centre.  Has a few players currently ahead of him in the pecking order but will be hoping that he is given an opportunity in a long season ahead.

There are other players who predominantly will play in other positions who can cover such as Owen Lane (really hope we see him play a few games at centre just as part of his ongoing rugby education), Steven Shingler, Jason Harries and Aled Summerhill. Shingler gives Cardiff Blues the second ball-playing option at 12 if required, and I do think 12 is his best position but gives the team good cover at 10 and 12 so can see him making the matchday 23 with that ability and also being a decent goalkicker.

Those are the centres for the upcoming season. The next instalment will look at the half-backs.
