Rob Murphy of Knockon.ie reviews the St Patrick's day action at the Sporstground, as Connacht faced the Dragons as they attempted to close the gap at the foot of the ML table on Lllanelli & Cardiff.
Connacht 16-3 Dragons

By Rob Murphy

Lets have lots more of this. Connacht have found their stride and are now starting to express themselves. They are a team on a mission and for the first time in years they are playing with a swagger. A sort of inner confidence that leads to days like Wednesday where the result was rarely in doubt and every player to a man, knew that.

Seven home games, six months and not one defeat. This St Patrick's Day win was by far the most impressive of this run of results. The Dragons took nothing from this contest because Connacht owned proceedings for almost the entire game, they shut their opponents down and for the large part of the contest, picked off the chances when they were presented.

Last year Connacht ran in five tries and secured a bonus point against a hapless Dragons side, this time it was only the one against an improved Newport based outfit but for most Connacht fans this encounter will have brought far more satisfaction. The intensity of effort from the outset was palpable in fact numerous Dragons players felt the full force.

Connacht were on the money in the lineout, they were positively on top at scrum time and in the loose, they just were too powerful for their play-off chasing opponents. Adrian Flavin was back in the starting line up with Sean Cronin on the bench for Ireland and produced by far his best all round effort of the year.

That was just the start, Connacht went with a more powerful ball carrying second row pairing of Michael Swift and Mike McCarthy and were richly rewarded. Swift was instrumental in most of the good work his side produced throughout the game, one cameo second half moment - a no look pass out of the tackle - set up Ian Keatley's third penalty.

Keatley is in the groove in the last few months, his in play kicking game is working a treat and he is getting his centres moving on the front foot. He had Conor O'Loughlin inside this time with Murphy out injured and the Buccaneers scrum half didn't disappoint.

Connacht led through an early Ian Keatley penalty and he doubled that with a more difficult kick on ten minutes. The Dragons were barely able to readjust before the game's crucial score game.

A breakout that started deep in their own territory with Gavin Duffy and was helped along by quick hands in the loose, finished with Fionn Carr getting Magners League try number five of a season where Connacht's total is nine, Keatley converted and the lead was nine.

The Dragons gained a foothold in the ten minutes before half time and Jason Tovey kicked an easy three points in front of the post but that was merely a brief lull for the home side.

Just after half time the east Wales outfit had one more onslaught on the Connacht line but superb scrumage work from Jamie Hagen and Brett Wilkinson along with phase upon phase of hard hitting defence in their own 22 kept their line in tact.

A monster tackle from Liam Bibo on a stunned Mathew Watkins forced the turnover, penalty and brought the biggest roar of the day. Even at that stage, with a half hour still to play, the signs were clear. The Dragons were not going to breakthrough.

The last half hour should have yielded more scores for the men in Green, they owned possession and played most of the game in Dragons territory but two missed kicks from Keatley - after he had struck a third to stretched the lead to 13 - halted the momentum slightly.

A serious looking injury to Niva Ta'auso was far more worrying however, his role is pivotal in the Connacht midfield and Connacht management will be praying that he will have recovered come the April run of home games with must win tags on them all.

While Europe remains the main target, the Magners League is still very much on Connacht minds. The gap to Ulster is down to nine and the target is to get within at least four before the final game of the season where the sides meet in Ravenhill. Overtaking them seems far fetched but even getting that close, at this stage, will be some achievement.

With Fionn Carr in superb form, Duffy playing out of his skin and Keatley controlling proceedings there was some excellent evidence that more wins could be on the cards. Up front Connacht overwhelmed an admittedly weakened Dragons back five in the pack.

George Naoupu was back to his best with some crucial turnovers, Muldoon didn't shirk and inch and will be happy with the discipline of his pack in the crucial second half period.

The signs are positive but Leinster away on Saturday week and even Edinburgh at home are much tougher assignments so there bigger hurdles ahead. More of the same will bring further rewards.

Connacht v. Dragons
Newport Gwent Dragons Head Coach Paul Turner has announced a 24-man squad for the region’s Magners League clash with Connacht at the Sportsground on Wednesday (6:30pm)

There have been mixed fortunes at the Dragons this week in the injury stakes as the region looks ahead to the Magners League match.

Prop Nigel Hall who has been out since October returned to Premiership action at the weekend after recovering from shoulder surgery and back row Joe Bearman (groin) and scrum half Danny Lee (shoulder) are both progressing well following surgery.

However, the region has been dealt a double blow in the loss of Lewis Evans and Adam Jones. Jones will undergo surgery for a ruptured tendon in his hand next week and could miss the rest of the season whilst Evans has been pulled out with a suspected broken thumb which could see him sidelined for 4-6 weeks.

Hooker Duane Goodfield who damaged his knee ligaments in the Barbarians game last Tuesday is still a doubt and Welsh squad members Luke Charteris and Danny Lydiate are also unavailable.

Newport captain Andrew Coombs has been called to the squad and back row Toby Faletau has been released from the Welsh Under 20 squad for the match.

Dragons Head Coach Paul Turner said “Although these injuries are always frustrating, both for the players and coaching staff, we have players keen to step up for these games.

“As we have seen already this season in players such as Tom Riley and Will Harries, all of our squad members are ready to make the most of the opportunities they are given and I have no doubt that Andrew Coombs and Toby Faletau in particular will seize this chance with both hands.”
Dragons Squad for Connacht

Forwards
Ben Castle, Hugh Gustafson, Pat Palmer, Aaron Coundley, Tom Willis (capt.), Steve jones, Adam Brown , Rob Sidoli, Hoani Macdonald, Andrew Coombs, Grant Webb, Toby Faletau, Gavin Thomas.

Martyn Thomas, Richard Fussell, Will Harries, Aled Brew, Tom Riley, Mathew Watkins, Ashley Smith, Jason Tovey, James Arlidge, James Leadbeater, Wayne Evans.

You'd have to hope that one of the other props has experience at Hooker, that's a serious gamble by Bradley. We certainly don't want to go uncontested against Dragons who are a pretty expansive side. At home you want to be able to dictate the pace of the game, and set pieces are critical to that...

I'm presuming Dermot Murphy must be injured, otherwise thats hardly a ringing endorsement for him. I'm a bit worried looking at that team. Why isn't Upton back starting again after the last week? that really impacts on our lineout.

It looks like Troy is injured/dropped. Bibo is there really because we have no-one else especially with Tiernan O'Halloran back in the u20 setup and Bradley wouldn't play him anyway. We look a bit more balanced in the centre alright with Ta'auso in for Wynne.

To find O'Connells pub, turn right when leaving the rugby grounds and walk about 15 mins. Its on the right hand side of the road on the corner of Eyre Square and across from the train/bus station.

Still 13-3 at the half. Connacht will have to do better with converting their chances into points in the second half if they are to win this one.

Bibo taking man and ball on the Connacht 22. Resulting penalty pumping downfield by Keatley.

Yeah, they fulled a few chances near the Dragons line. Few knock ons, and some poor decisions. Still, going well at the moment.
Raft of subs on now.

Come on Connacht.

A good win for Connacht, but a better team would have made them pay for the chances they let go begging. A little more clinical and they could have well been pushing for a try bonus point.

Re: Connacht v. Dragons
Ya agree with the comments made, good win but perhaps could have been a bit more clinical. However, the defence was very strong all night, the scrum went well in general and my fears about the lineout proved unfounded. It was a big improvement on the Glasgow game even if Dragons didn't offer a huge amount. Keatley had a good game tonight I thought bar one fluffed opportunity late on. Just two more games before the Challenge Cup so tonight was a welcome win. Bit of a worry about Ta'auso who went off injured.

Re: Connacht v. Dragons
Connacht were far superior to the Dragons last night, and probably should have had at least 2 more tries. Earlier in this message list Ummm had asked what Bibo was doing there - I think he proved why last night, particularly so with that massive hit he put in in the second half. Also think Swifty deserves a special mention, he was on fire again last night - twilight of his career seems to be his best!

I don't know, I've always likened Bibo to Dirk Kuyt at Liverpool. Not very flash, doesn't score loads of goals but works his @#$%& off and is a real team player....

Must admit I am one of those that hasn't rated Bibo too highly probably because as a wing you expect a certain amount of flash and goal scoring. Also hard work doesn't come over all that well from the radio coverage and match trackers. Not sure he has quite the size for a move to the centre but think endeavour and team play are appreciated greater there.

Wasn't Bibo signed as a Fullback/outhalf/prolific penalty kicker?
Regardless, I do think he's out second best winger at the moment.

Think he's filled in at 10 a few times for Buccs this season alright...

Bucaneers Match Report
GALWEGIANS 25 BUCCANEERS 17
September 21st 2009

GALWEGIANS retained their Connacht Senior League title when defeating Buccaneers 25-17 in the final series match at Crowley Park, Galway, on Saturday. This decisive fixture proved a lively and entertaining affair on a fine, sunny afternoon with the home side also bettering the midlanders in try-scoring by 4 to 3.

Nevertheless, Buccs will take considerable heart from this outing as their patchwork squad battled with commendable commitment and bravery to upset the odds against a physically stronger and far more experienced Wegians side. Buccaneers’ already stretched squad had further defections with Alex Hayman and Paul Harte out through injury, although both hope to return to action this coming weekend, while Marcus Madden was unavailable and, of course, Kolo Kiripati is a long-term absentee due to a knee injury.

Connacht’s Liam Bibo debuted at outhalf where he linked up with Conor O’Loughlin and Cormac Sheehy and Peter Smith came in in the three-quarters line. Youth got its fling in the pack where Conor Higgins and Martin Staunton propped with recent U-20’s Padraig Burke and Sean Stapleton at wing-forward. Galwegians welcomed back Peter Bracken in the front row and Ambrose Conboy at flanker in a far heftier pack that featured Joe Moran and an interesting and useful addition at No. 8 Ati Olive. Representative star Kieran Campbell featured at scrumhalf with Aifai Esera in the centre, and fullback Rob O’Beirne and wing Mark Butler added pace and potential to the sky blues backs division.

Buccs must have feared for the worst when former international Campbell intercepted inside the visitors’ half after just three minutes to scamper away for the opening try but Buccaneers settled and their endeavours were rewarded when O’Loughlin’s persistence was rewarded with a 14th minute try to tie the scores 5-5. Just five minutes later, Wegians made the superior power in their pack pay when they bulldozed over for an Olive try. Soon afterwards, the lively No. 8 grabbed his second try wide on the right on 24 minutes.

Ten minutes later a wicked bounce following a Wegians kick ahead left the Buccaneers cover wrong-footed and Ross Shaughnessy made the most of his good fortune for an opportunist try and placekicker Butler finally found his range with the conversion to stretch the home side 22-5 ahead. But just before the break, O’Loughlin outflanked the home defence for a well-taken try wide on the right to give the visitors a timely boost.

Buccaneers resumed brightly and punished the hosts for a late tackle by substitute Liam Casserly in their own half. The resultant penalty was punted to touch on the left and Anthony Hughes won fine lineout possession and the ball was moved smartly to Bibo who showed good strength to crash through for a 42nd minute try. He too finally found the range with the conversion to tighten the arrears to 17-22 but a Butler penalty nine minutes later completed the scoring.

Nevertheless, a willing Buccs side caused plenty of discomfort for their hosts for whom Butler had one bad penalty miss. O’Loughlin, as busy and energetic as ever, was man of this match while Henshaw and Smith settled into their strides as the game progressed, forcing Wegians to concede penalties in midfield. Skipper Ivan Muldoon was sin-binned late in the game when Galwegians were guilty of one infringement too many. Buccs should have notched a fourth try but did not spot an overlap to the right, instead opting to go left to no avail. However, there was resolve and passion in the Pirates display with Colm Rigney and Garreth Halligan setting the tone and youngsters Stapleton and Burke acquitting themselves well in testing conditions. Overall, there were certainly positives to take from this contest.

Meanwhile, Wegians have a promising mix of brawn, pace and experience and could be a useful force in the AIB League.

BUCCANEERS:- T.Hynes; W.Henshaw, P.Smith, G.Kelly, C.Sheehy; L.Bibo, C.O’Loughlin; M.Staunton, G.Halligan, C.Higgins; A.Hughes, J.Tormey; P.Burke, S.Stapleton and C.Rigney (captain). Galwegians Match Report
Galwegians 1st XV 8 - 15 Buccaneers
Date: 31 October 2009 KO: tbc
Competition: AIB League Div. 1B
Venue: Dubarry Park
Match Notes:

Galwegians Scorers:
Try: Tiernan O'Halloran
Pen: Mark Butler

Buccaneers won the local bragging rights when they deservedly overcame a lacklustre Galwegians in this Division 1b derby at Dubarry Park on Saturday.

Having retained their Connacht League title in September with a convincing win against Buccs, Wegians would have very much targeted this game for an away victory. But the recent form guide indicated differently, as the Blues have now lost three League games on the bounce, while the victorious Buccs are buoyant having recorded two consecutive victories following their surprise away win at Ballymena the previous week.

Heavy rain had made playing and handling conditions very difficult, and Buccaneers adapted better by dominating territory in the opening quarter. But for all that they were unable to convert this into points on the scoreboard, squandering some early scoring opportunities including two 5 metre lineouts. Having absorbed the early pressure and having defended relatively comfortably, Wegians then began to exert some pressure of their own in the second quarter. And they surprised their hosts when they opened the scoring on 26 minutes.

It was a well-worked move following a line-out 30 metres out. A clean take by Brian McClearn and a charging run by his second row partner Joe Moran created the platform. Then a clever blind-side move saw scrum-half Kieran Campbell feed the incoming full-back Mark Butler, who drew his marker to send Connacht Academy winger Tiernan O’Halloran clear to dive in at the corner for an excellent try.

Although John Cleary was unlucky with the conversion attempt, suddenly at 5-0 Wegians were looking comfortable and now threatening on occasions. But unfortunately their opening score proved one of their only fluid passages of play, as a succession of unforced errors, including knock-ons to misplaced passes, was to prove costly.

The turning point of the game came right on the stroke of half-time as Buccs threw themselves a lifeline. There seemed no apparent danger when an attack and routine backline move fed winger Paul Harte 20 metres out. But he made the most of his opportunity as he dusted off the feeble challenges of O’Halloran and Butler to near the line, with his full-back JH Potgeiter on hand to gratefully accept the scoring pass and dot down near the corner. The South African then landed an excellent convert to edge Buccs’ 7-5 ahead at the break.

This score galvanised the hosts who came out stronger in the second-half, and Potgeiter stretched their lead to five points with a well-struck penalty from near halfway on 44 minutes after the Blues midfield defence drifted offside. Wegians were suddenly looking bereft of ideas, but a rare salvo into opposition territory by substitute back Liam Bibo led to a penalty, which Butler converted to reduce arrears to 10-8.

This should have served as a platform to build on, but instead Wegians almost immediately conceded the initiative to a hungrier and more determined home side. And the game was effectively decided when the homesters scored their second try just before the hour mark. Following a sustained attacking period, Buccs substitute winger John O’Brien almost finished in the left-hand corner before being brilliantly held up by the scrambling Wegians defence. However it proved a temporary reprieve for the Blues, when from the resulting 5-metre scrum Buccs player-coach no. 8 Colm Rigney picked and drove almost effortlessly through the defence to score. Potgeiter’s conversion attempt sailed narrowly wide to leave the gap at just seven points.

Although they still had plenty of time to regain the initiative, in truth a static Wegians never looked like breaching the Buccs defence, as unforced errors and poor decision-making continued to dog their performance. And in the end they had to settle for a consolation losing bonus point.

The Blues now urgently need to re-discover their form and start realising their undoubted potential, and they have an opportunity to kick-start their season when away to Division 2 side UCD in the Third Round of the AIB Cup in Dublin next Saturday.
