Coventry boss Dave Addleton says failure is not an option
By John Wilkinson, Coventry Telegraph
January 26 2010
NEVER one to shy away from a challenge during his own playing career, former hooker Dave Addleton is taking a predictably focused approach into his new role as head coach at Coventry. With eight league and cup games to go before the start of the Championship relegation play-offs, Addleton is determined to make the most of the time available as Cov prepare for the six games which will define
their whole season.

And the prospect of failure is one he refuses to entertain.

“We have to make sure we stay in the Championship – it’s as simple as that, we can’t think about anything else,” said Addleton, as uncompromising as he was throughout his own 354 appearances for the club.

“Phil Maynard felt we needed some direction and I was happy to be asked to do the job. It is going to be tough in the play-offs and we have to make sure we put in the hard work that is needed to get there in the right shape, but it’s a challenge I am relishing.

“Everyone knows how I feel about this club and I will do everything I can to make it work.”

Addleton, who has been operating as forwards coach with Toomy Hayes looking after the backs and Adrian Lightowler in charge of fitness and conditioning, says that everyone will have a chance to prove themselves over the remaining games as Cov look for their strongest line-up.

“There are areas where we must improve things and we will continue to look at the guys who have just come in and see what they offer us. Our big target is to make sure that the boys are still fresh when it comes to the play-offs, and those who are fit and are playing well will be the ones who will start.

“I’m confident we will get through it and keep our place in the league – I’m not going to think in any other terms and will be making sure that everyone here feels the same.”

Addleton’s first game since stepping up ended in a 27-16 defeat at the hands of league leaders Bristol on Saturday.

“We conceded three tries from line-out drives, which was the difference and disappointing to see,” he said. “They took their chances well and we found them difficult to break down when we got in good positions.

“But our defence in phased play was very good and didn’t let us down, and there were good things in the overall performance that we can take from it.

“London Welsh away this weekend is another toughy, they are third in the table and going well, but it offers us another good opportunity to test ourselves and where we are going.!

I don't know how good a job he will do but I hope it will be as good as Steve Harrison, who without doubt was the best coach we had here for years.

Dave should call him and take advise about how to return the team to winning ways in this division.

Then we'll all have something to cheer about.

Best of luck Dave, we're behind you 100 %
