COVENTRY were left to count the cost of a red card for captain Scott Morgan as they went down 24-23 at home to Fylde – their second single-point defeat in successive National League one games.
The former Wales international second row was sent off by referee Craig Maxwell-Keys for retaliation after 28 minutes with Fylde leading 14-3.
Cov came back to lead 23-14 midway through the third quarter, but with kicker Cliffie Hodgson enduring an off day with the boot, they were pegged back in the closing moments as the visitors made their numerical advantage count.
“It’s frustrating and disappointing way to lose the way we did,” said rugby director Phil Maynard. “With 14 blokes it was always going to be an uphill struggle, but I can’t fault the attitude from start to finish and everybody worked so hard to get us into a position where we could have won the game.
“You wouldn’t normally expect Cliffie to miss those kicks, but it happens sometimes.”
