Blackheath 61 - 29 Coventry

Ouch.

By Russ (Site Editor)
January 13 2018

If we should go up, I don't think we'll miss going to Blackheath...

I guess the run had to come to an end at some point, I just didn't think it would be quite as dramatic as this!

Cov at least got the try scoring bonus point to bring home, but other than that it was a(nother) tough day in South London.  Just to top it all off, apparently Pete White got a red card at the end for punching.

Some good news:  The development squad won 19 - 60.  So on aggregate I think we win.  :)

AAAAaaargh!
I'm drowning myself in gin in all measure of despair.
The measure of this Coventry side will be the response.
And I've supported my wonderful club through some pretty awful times. This is one of the best runs of recent times, not a car crash or recipe for disaster.

Delete the first two lines and you have a good message to deliver. First two lines simply not needed.

Didn't see that coming...... Now all the teams will believe we are beatable, raising their game. This will need a strong mentality over the next few games, one more defeat like that and we will be under severe pressure.

People have got carried away with our lead, forgetting we hadn't played any of the top 5 away and DMP twice. That in theory was the easiest of them. I think our season has only just begun.

Completely disagree, we have won 16 games on the bounce, 24 if you include last season, today was a bad day at the office granted, we just never got going against a BH side who played far better than their league position would suggest. Put it behind us and move on. We will win this league, today was a slap in the face we will learn from it! Esher at home next week and we will be back on course.

Agree with MooseMagic. No need to panic despite the dramatic nature of the result and scoreline. These boys have shown a ton of class and ability thus far.

A big response over the next 5 very winnable fixtures and our lead over 2nd and 3rd will be extended prior to travelling to DMP.

Cmon Cov.

Having watched Cov for over 40 years , that went straight into the top 3 of worst defeats. The other two had overiding reasons and background , being not being paid and last game of season and the majority of the team leaving. So in the context of this season and the fact that in one game we increased our points conceded by a third, this goes to the top of defeats.
Nobody saw this manner of defeat coming , the defence was truly abysmal. Especially one try where their right winger avoided 4 tacklers in quick succession. One Bheath player took the pee also by collecting a gift of a pass from Narraway and then proceeded to hold up in the air above his head on the point and touch down.
Cov did have a 8/9 minute spell either side of half time where we scored 3 unanswered tries.
As a supporter of any sports team you dont mind a defeat, but the nature of this defeat was shocking. The senior leaders on the pitch certainly didnt show their mettle yesterday either.Pete White also has put the club in a difficult place also by being sent off near the end, the video evidence will be interesting.
Esher will get a backlash but im worried for the next away game at Bishops stortford, more top 5 away yet to come.

Mark . Agree with your comments on the game, it was bad, worse that it was at Blackheath, one of my least favourite places to visit.
Your point about the officials is valid, but they did not help. The ‘Clubs’ 14 technical yellows before yesterday would suggest they tend to play right at the offside limit and are regularly pinged for it. Yesterday they were not.
As regards Pete White, the broken nose suffered would suggest him being The transgressed, rather than the transgressor. Getting a Red , whilst the perpetrator is issued a yellow would suggest a miscarriage? I will leave that there Mark.

Without being banned, i would guess a broken nose would mean 2-4 weeks recovery. I guess we have Brazier and Emery, but is there a possibility we can get Tom Kessler back on a short term loan?

Well don't underestimate Bishop Stortford A, Plymouth A and DMP A. I knew yesterday would be very very tough, but I had us down for a narrow win. What I didn't expect was such a shocker.

Not only have we lost our unbeatable tag, we have lost our hard to beat tag and all those unbeaten games are history. That was with practically our strongest team on paper bar Heath Stevens. We need to get back in the saddle quickly and the next two games are now our biggest of the season

We have seen far worse examples of playing on the edge of off side this season. As everyone knows i would be the first on their case.
As a team we had only one concerted period of pressure in the whole game , which came about 15 minutes into the second half.
Blackheaths first mistake of the game came after 50 minutes of play.Which showed how well they played.
Pete white nearly got involved in a fracas with Bheath after they scored ,several minutes before he got sent off also Paul.

They were about 20 points ahead and out of sight when Stokes got yellow. Whites red was in injury time. Blackheath had put a mountain between us after the first 20 minutes.

I disagree Cliff. Esher might get the match video and see where we were weak defensively. If their tails are up, and they put us straight on the back foot, we could be in trouble if we don't weather the storm in the first 20 minutes, which will be key

Couple of things have not been mentioned, in the fact that from the start blackheath were loath to kick the ball and were attacking with ball in hand from anywhere. I would also say the narrow/blind side was attacked more than in any other game this season, at least that was our perception. The lack of kicking to us, was roundly supported by there supporters because far too often they just give the ball away by poor kicking.(HMMMM that has a familiar ring from the past).

We need to win 4 out of the next 5, keeping a clear points advantage at the top of the league. Sadly, the other teams will come at us with new belief with ball in hand, imitating BH. The coaches need to have a game plan and the team stick to it, playing catch up, particularly in away games is not always gonna happen. Not a time to panic, 24 games unbeaten is unprecedented even for Cov, so time to buckle down and work damned hard all over the field for 80 minute.

Dont agree with you at all. This was primarily down to Blackheath being by far the better team in every aspect of the game yesterday, including having the rub of the green. Everything they did came off and your failure (on this post) to give them an ounce of credit is poor. And I have seen many other defeats where I have been far more annoyed than this one...

I wasn't there so can't comment on the game - interesting though that there is no mention of the officiating on here, which tells me that wasn't as big a factor as in some games. A try bonus point is better than no points at all. All teams have a bad day at the office, Blackheath played at or above their potential and the Cov players/coaches will ask the hard questions, work hard and regroup. Esher will have more belief after their second half comeback against Ampthill, only for an 82nd minute penalty to deny them the win - but back at fortress BPA I'm sure we'll get the wheels back on the wagon.

Personally, I can't really believe that this is one of our worst ever defeats. At the end of the day we scored 29 and brought home a bonus point.

I'm sure we've had bigger kickings than this before, and I'm also pretty sure we'll have them again!

I think what hurts is that we've started to expect that we'll completely dominate teams, and it stings when we don't.

We shouldn't forget that every one else in National League 1 wants to win too, and especially against us.

I always think it's slightly disrespectful to assume that a defeat is down to your own shortcomings as it disregards the obvious effort and skill of the opposition. Fair play to Blackheath for bringing the game to us and for playing to their own strengths rather than worrying about ours.

If you want to turn a negative into a positive, this gives the coaching staff an insight into our potential weaknesses before the really critical games that are to come. We've got a bit of time to work on them now, and I'm sure the video of the game will be worn thin before we take on DMP and Plymouth.

Cheers all,

Russ...

Having not attended the game,my comments are based solely on what I’ve heard and read.
Firstly, congratulations to Blackheath on what sounds like a very professional and well planned performance not only in their own game plan, but also in the way they quickly worked out how the game was to be refereed. Something that I think we have been very good at so far this season.
Next week can’t come quickly enough for me,as I’m sure this weeks training sessions will be very hard and focused.
By the sounds of things, our pack were very much second best and spent a lot of time in reverse, which suggests that there was something not quite right, possibly a few injuries that were worse than envisaged. Or was it just that the whole group were below par at the same time? If you’re not on your game at this level, there are some very good players that capitalise.
I would never blame the referee,as to officiate at this level they must have proved themselves to people far more knowledgeable than 99% of us experts in the stands. The art is to assess the referees interpretation of the laws and adjust accordingly.
Esher next week will be a fascinating encounter,I definitely think we will win, and get the bonus point, but the points against column will be very important, the fewer the better,to rebuild our defensive credibility, to nil them would be great.
Bad day at the office, blip on the landscape, many other clich’es can be written, but let’s get back on the horse and resume normal service as quickly as possible.

I was at the game, I have to give credit to Blackheath, they were extremely good yesterday. They took the game to us and kept hold of possession very well making very few mistakes and scored points with every chance they had.
They did score some excellent tries, keeping the ball alive and playing a expansive game plan.
Although our defence obviously wasn't up to par, as a team we also made a lot of errors.
we lost to a very good team yesterday so even at our best this would of been a very close game.
I looked at the team selected and thought this is one of our strongest squads selected so far. I would of started tolmie and masiey for my strongest xv and tried to fit daynes on the bench but that's about it.
That team will be stronger from this lose and the coaches will learn more from this game than any other so far this season.
Looking forward to Saturday.

With my fan's hat on (and not club). Blackheath's defeat at BP was the only one they had in their first eight games, and for the first 15-20 minutes of that I felt they were the better side. Our first try was a little fortunate, but it changed the whole dimension of the game.
For whatever reason, Blackheath's form seems to have dipped after that, but they have some quality players and on Saturday they showed what a good side they can be.
It was their purple day, everything they attempted came off, and confidence soared. Hats off to them.
These things can happen (Liverpool just beat Manchester City). I suggest there is enough experience, spirit and desire among the players and coaches to make sure this doesn't happen again. From 39-0 down, to score five tries themselves says something. You don't become a bad team overnight, especially with what has gone before. We must have faith!

I haven't tried to suggest we have become a bad side overnight, I knew yesterday would be a very hard game. But with all our hard away games still to come we still have a lot of rugby to play. Even with a 15 point cushion there won't be a lot of room to manoeuvre or allow too many performances like yesterday. To be honest it might be a good thing it has happened. We still have some of the best coaches and players in this league. But it is a reminder that in this league anybody can beat anybody.

Its all a matter of perspective with this game and result and in the context of the season as a whole.Yes blackheath played their best rugby at home for some while according to their supporters. As supporters we never gave up and continued to shout right up to the end, although completely bewildered. In the same context, all the players and coaches will now be able to show a side to their game, they havent had chance to show and take us through to the promised land of the championship.COME ON COV.

Absolutely. Credit where it is due, they came with a plan, and from the start it worked perfectly. Blackheath had it won at their second try. After that it was just how much.
