Coach Ben Ryan said, "Our goal is to go past New Zealand after the next two tournaments which is no easy thing but definitely something we are capable of.

"The Cake Tin sold out in under seven minutes and as ever it's going to be a brilliant atmosphere. Whether it's the PA system playing the Coronation Street theme tune as we run out or bars of soap getting thrown at us as we warm up, more memories will be made out there.

England won their two opening matches, first coming from behind twice to overpower France 26-10 and then seeing off Canada 34-7, Captain Ollie Phillips (Newcastle Falcons) and Ben Gollings (Gold Coast, Australia) impressing along with new speedster Daniel Norton (Gloucester Rugby), but came unstuck against the combative Pumas of Argentina, who topped the group.

The Pumas were held to a 17-all draw by a battling Canada side making their Series debut this season, before beating France 33-21 and finished the day as the only side unbeaten.

Canada and France played out an absorbing match to finish their day one campaigns, ending dead-locked at 12-12, a second draw for the Canadians.

Phillips said: “We're disappointed that we lost to Argentina, we set our standard to go out there and win every game. That's our ambition, that's where we want to go so a minor blip but we're through to the quarters, which is the main thing. We're still in the knock-out competition where we want to be, we just made it a little bit harder for ourselves.

"We believe we've got the players and the talent to go and win against any team so, while that game was very disappointing, we'll learn from our mistakes. Argentina played very well, frustrated us and didn't let us play how we wanted to play so we'll come back tomorrow and regroup."

England will face Fiji at 2.55pm (GMT +13) on day two of the tournament.

Ben Gollings scored the winning conversion in the final for England

Ben Gollings held his nerve to convert Isoa Damu's breakaway try in the dying seconds to beat New Zealand by the slender margin of two points and claim a first NZI Sevens title for England.

New Zealand looked on course for victory after leading throughout but England captain Ollie Phillips inspired the fightback and Damu's try at the death pulled the English level, leaving Gollings with a conversion in front of the posts.
