Match Preview

This Saturday (23rd January) Exeter Chiefs face one of the toughest games of the season so far.  Things are always close when the two sides meet and supporters of both sides have had cause to hold their breath in the last few minutes of many games whilst the outcome gets sorted.

Will it be the same this time?  I for one would be more than happy to be in that position, provided it's a last ditch, successfull kick from Steeno that resolves it!  I'd be OK with a close sncounter in any 'ordinary' season.  However, given recent results with the Chiefs not firing on all cylinders for large periods and Bedford dispatching Nottingham with style, I find the levcel of anxiety somewhat elevated.

Bedford may be 16 points adrift of the Chiefs but they have only scored 15 points less and conceded 27 points more.  Currently lying fourth in the table they must be assured of a top 8 finish and play-off place.  With the Chiefs also assured of this what have both sides at stake on Saturday?  Bedford will be keen to avenge the home loss against Exeter in October.  The Chiefs will want to start winning on a regular basis again and build some momentum to take into the play-offs.  Both sides will want to put down a marker should they meet in the play-offs.

So, what's going to happen?  I haven't got a clue but I'm sure Rob & Co. will be doing everything they can to ensure a Chiefs win.

Although it's a long time since I've seen any Championship rugby I will get to see some rugby tomorrow (19th) at Sandy Park.  The Chiefs are playing Wales!  The Welsh U20 side have arranged to play a Chiefs side as part of the preparation for their age group 6 Nations.   Exeter Chiefs v Wales under 20's

Thanks for the review moorsman , also think it important to finish in first or second to avoid bris until the final. Looking forward to both tonights and saterdays game.

why only worry about bristol? several sides this season have shown they can run us close (very in some cases!) and two others apart from briz have beaten us.

its going to be a funny old couple of months, and im expecting a number of "upsets".

I agree. Two other teams have already beaten us and as you say, others have run us close. With all the signings, dual reg etc. i think there is the potential for many an upset. We just have to keep faith with the coaches and believe their planning and reading of this shambolic "championship" season is correct.

Unfortunately I don't think we can control whether we avoid Bris till the final. whether we finish 2nd or 3rd we won't be in their pool but, should they finish 2nd in their playoff pool and we finish top we would have to play them in the semis, equally if we finish 2nd and they finish top we would have to play them, therefore both we and they have to finish 2nd or top of our pools to avoid them in the semis. Going on current league positions you would have to say that Bris and us would finish top of our respective play off pools but there are 4 possible outcomes and only 2 of those avoid playing them in the semis so it's a 50/50 chance (assuming we both get to the semis)

PRESS RELEASE

CHIEFS HEAD HOME AS WORK BEGINS ON NEW NORTH TERRACE

Exeter Chiefs will play their first home game in four weeks against Bedford Blues (KO 3pm) this Saturday as work gets underway on the new north terrace.

Chiefs’ last game at home was postponed due to the freezing conditions, which means the team has not run out to a Sandy Park crowd since the Bristol match on December 27.

Supporters who attend Saturday’s game will see evidence that Exeter City Council has granted permission for the club to go ahead with its plan to build a new terrace at the north end of the ground. This will be followed by extensions to the South West Communications Stand and West Grandstand to take the capacity to 10,600 in time for the play-offs, which are due to begin on March 20.

But meanwhile, it is business as usual for the playing side as head coach Rob Baxter selects a 24-man squad from which he will pick his 22 on Friday following the Academy’s 21-18 win over Wales U20s last night.

He said today: “Despite a lot of boys playing 80 minutes last night, training today has been one of our best sessions in a few weeks. And we have now got a group of guys who feel they all played well last weekend but we can only pick 15 players. I have got to hope that will give us a good performance for this weekend.”

Saturday’s match will see Richie Baxter presented with a memento to commemorate his 300th league appearance for the club, which he reached against London Welsh on January 9.

There are still tickets available for this game. Please call 01392 890890 between 10am and 4pm or log on to www.exeterchiefs.co.uk.

Decent squad but no Macka or Tom Bedford? I guess Rob must be saving them for the play-offs (Sm56)

Nope, Moorsman, sadly me thinks macca and Bedford do not fit RB plans currently. Personnaly i think they are the best 2 centres we have in the squad, when they play the team to go forward with a vengeance whereas the others seem to prefer to run across the pitch. I am here to be knocked down.

Certainly Macka and tom seem out of favour and with the announcement of the new DR saints center from saints nick even more limited game time i fear or maybe the new guy is being brought into make a partnership which will attack as the comments from the saints guys in the other thread say he is quick.

Having watched macca & bedford along with josh, drew and steve on tuesday night, i think all the backs on Saturday will have to put in a massive display! There can be no more "excuses"
