Big Bob
Well I now have some answers to the my questions; Rob Baxter went for the “first team” and Nic Sestaret came in and not Paul McKenzie who played in the rain on Friday evening against the other Cornish team. Oh and I am pleased that I got it wrong about Steeno who played his part today.
With the Chiefs getting a try scoring bonus win to do the league double over the Pirates, scoring twice as many points into the bargain then I should be really pleased but I am not. I had the honour of standing next to Moorsman and the Oggy Man et al at what was the end defended by the Chiefs in the first half. We hardly saw in any close up play in the first half, the Chiefs having the vast majority of the possession and territory but with relatively little to show for it at 0 -13.
When the lads gave away a soft try early in the second half, I thought that we were going to pay for our lack of scoring but I was mightily impressed with the response from Exe, great pressure for the pushover try and Richie’s long breakaway try was great to see. What do we do then give away another two tries. This was not exactly a win ugly but I this is not the Chiefs at their peak - I know that Rob wants to time that right!
More video analysis work I think, you can beat your life other sides will be analysing the tape of this game. With such forward dominance we could and should have done a little better – that my opinion anyway.
On a more positive note well done for Clarky for scoring a try on his hundredth appearance – nice one and thanks for what you have done for us so far.
The last time that I went to Camborne’s ground was in the early ‘80’s, and was a pleasant ground it is, if not a little cold today. The icy wind was eased by some pleasant vendors of tickets, beer and pasties.
On the way home I heard the incredibly biased Radio Cornwall commentators – it was a moral victory for them because they rested a few good players to save them for the play offs! I am asking myself what’s the point? I know what I am about to raise is an old chestnut but you ain’t going up anyway because the ground that you are using in no way meets Premiership standards. Seeing as I have probably stirred up a hornets’ nest I may as well poke the stick in a little more. Some Pirates fans have in the past complained about the Chiefs beer prices and lack of toilets at Sandy Park (we now have more). I paid £15 each for me at the misses to get in, the same cost as a ground ticket at Exeter , I paid £2.50 for a programme (50 p more than at Exe) and so the saving on the ale was, if you’ll excuse the pun “small beer”. You had enough toilets for today’s small (for a derby) crowd but nothing to crow about.
Before any Pirates fans dismiss these comments because they come from a Devonian, I have to “fess up” that I was born in Cornwall and lived there till my early twenties and my wife is Cornish (my understanding of the definition of being Cornish being that you were born in Cornwall and that both of your parents were also born there #)
Now that I may have upset some Chiefs and some Pirates fans I will sit back and await the responses, happy knowing that the sites web traffic will be helped a little.
