More than just a game – Montpellier v Exeter Chiefs

Well it was certainly a great game, played with great skill and courage by both teams and, as a Chiefs supporter, I was of course delighted with the result.

Exeter Chiefs were indeed winners on the pitch, but in my view the biggest winner was the spirit of the game and its supporters.

In the days leading up to the game, Exeter fans were afforded a warm welcome all over the City of Montpellier. But this was only a taste of the welcome waiting for us at the Altrad Stadium on the day of the match.

Outside the ground, a lively band accompanied singing, dancing and chanting by both sets of supporters; the brass band even played along with the Tomahawk Chop.

Inside the stadium, the Montpellier Supporters’ Club - Clapas’Cistes were generous hosts and friendship was spontaneous.

During the game, the Montpellier Band was relentless, the Tomahawk Chop rang round the stadium, and scores were jubilantly celebrated. One team won, and one team lost, but friendship was a major winner. This comment translated from the Clapas’Cistes Facebook page says it all –

“Whatever the disappointment of the day, let us appreciate these exceptional moments that rugby can still make us live... being Clapas' Cistes is to share this friendship between citizens of the Ovalie, regardless of the colour of the jersey or the spoken language . It's simpler on days of victory but it's still true despite defeat...”

Nemani Nadolo also tweeted –

“Why I think rugby is the best game of all!!. Win Lose or Draw. Rugby is the winner. Chiefs and MRH supporters enjoying the rugby”

Rugby friendship is certainly special and long may it continue to thrive and prosper.
