Now comes the acid test for the Glaws revival
By Cherry Picker
February 16 2010
Gloucester have demonstrated a remarkable turnaround in both performances and results in the last six weeks or so, but this weekend provides the team, coach Bryan Redpath and his new working relationship with Sir Ian McGeechan with the acid test … champions and table-toppers Leicester Tigers at Welford Road.

As professionals, Glaws will be keen to put their new form to the test, and there’s no bigger examination of a team’s strength than a visit to the Tigers, especially when they are hungry for points.
Last weekend’s thumping bonus point win over Harlequins as Guinness Premiership rugby returned to Kingsholm moved Glaws into sixth place, but while that is a lot better than the position we have got used to this season, fans need to remember that Glaws actually finished last season in sixth place, and that was considered well short of good enough.
So, short, in fact that Dean Ryan paid for it with his job.
Leicester are top of the table, but Saracens and London Irish are just one and two points behind them respectively, and both clubs have a game in hand.
After his outstanding performance in the win over Quins and his announcement that while negotiation for a new contract have stalled, he wants to stay with Glaws, skipper Gareth Delve has hit the nail on the head when he says the game at Welford Road will tell everybody how much Glaws have really improved.

He told the Citizen that the Quins performance had been building for six weeks: “The acid test is to take that up to Welford Road and really see how far we've come.

"We've stuck together, we've been through our sticky patch hopefully, and if we keep building come March, April, May we can be a very good side.
"We've been burnt before by starting well and finishing poorly. We certainly didn't do that this season. Hopefully we get it right this time and give ourselves a chance to pick something up at the end of the year."

It looks a long hall to the top four play-off places, but the team has managed to climb into the Heineken Cup top six, and staying there is very important from a financial and a playing point of view.

Rory Lawson, GloucesterMeanwhile, though the Delve contract situation is still on hold, there is some good news on that front with Rory Lawson (right) making it a round dozen players to extend their Kingsholm contracts.
He has added two years to his deal, and the scrum-half told the Ctitzen: "I'm very, very happy that we've got everything sorted. I've loved my time at Gloucester - it's a great club and I really feel as though we are going places at the moment.

"From a personal point of view, I feel as though my game has developed during my time at the club and, of course, working with someone like Bryan is a huge plus for a scrum-half.
"We've a big couple of months ahead of us and lots to play for. I'm really looking forward to it."
Still to sign a new deal from the first team squad are Delve, Lesley Vainikolo, Adam Eustace, Darren Dawidiuk and Greg Somerville, who has the option of another year but is considering a return to his home country with his family.
