Time for Glaws to start winning on the road

Somerville - out
By Cherry Picker
March 3 2010
Recent performances, results and the long overdue climb up the Guinness Premiership table they have earned suggest Gloucester have put the bad old days behind them – but don’t get too excited just yet. Things might be looking up at Kingsholm, but away from home there is some way to go.

Since that awful draw with Worcester in the first match of 2010, Glaws have won six out of seven games in all competitions, the only defeat coming ten days ago at Leicester.
But they have still only won one away game in the Guinness Premiership, the 26-10 success at Leeds way back at the beginning of October.
Coach Bryan Redpath and his players are aiming for at least the top six, and Redpath has said that he thinks a place in the top four isn’t out of the question.

But it will be unless they start winning away, and the next chance to get things right on the road comes on Sunday when Glaws visit Wasps at High Wycombe.
If Glaws are to climb further up the table from the seventh place they now occupy, wasps are one of the teams in their sights – fifth top on 39 points, eight ahead of Glaws.
The top four are still 12 points away, but bottom club Leeds are still only eight points behind, so the Cherry and Whites are not oiut of the woods yet.

Leeds have been showing an improvement in recent games, and perhaps it’s Sale – who looked well out of sorts in last weekend’s hammering at Kingsholm – who should be more worried about the big drop.

This weekend’s GP games are: Harlequins v Worcester, and Leicester v London Irish on Saturday with Leeds v Saracens, Newcastle v Bath and Sale v Northampton the other games on Sunday.

There is a long way to go yet, but with a blank weekend when the internationals return the following week, a win at Wasps would be the perfect follow-up to that easy win over Sale.

But they will have to do it without Greg Somerville, who broke his arm againt Sale – and on recent form, the New Zealander will be badly missed.

But at least Mike Tindall is back in the frame and on current form, there’s no reason why Glaws should not be good enough for a result at Adams Park.

If they don’t get one, the old doubts will return again, and that would be a major shame after so much early-season damage has been repaired since the turn of the year.
