No more cup spankings, says Redpath
By Cherry Picker
March 17 2010
The Gloucester team that will play in its second consecutive Anglo-Welsh Cup Final this weekend is as different from last year’s as the two venues – Worcester’s Sixways does not compare to Twickenham, and there’s just as big a contrast in the make-up of the Cherry and Whites.

Last season Dean Ryan’s team didn’t just lose to Cardiff Blues, they were humiliated – or, perhaps more accurately, humiliated themselves – on the wrong end of a 50-12 scoreline.
It was a result and a performance that played a major part in Ryan’s departure and Bryan Redpath’s elevation to the hot seat, and now that he has had time to work on the squad, Redpath believes there will be no more embarrassments like that one they suffered last season.
Many of the personalities involved both on and off the pitch may be the same, but anybody who has seen Glaws in action since the turn of the year will agree there is a massive difference.
The fact that Glaws beat the Blues in last weekend’s semi-final, albeit on an international weekend, suggests he has a point, but he know the final against a Northampton team that has thrived after bouncing back from relegation won’t be easy.
The LV Cup may not be as high profile as many would like it to be, but it’s a competition which is worth winning for financial reasons if nothing else, and Glaws can be expected to go into it with the right attitude.

Tindall v DragonsHowever, they will be without Mike Tindall (right), incredibly selected to start for England against France after only three comeback games following a four-month absence with a hamstring injury. His fellow joint captain, Gareth Delve, is on duty for Wales.
Comparing this season’s team with the one that was hammered at Twickers, Redpath told the Citizen: "I just think we're stronger mentally. We've gone through some tough times.
"We had our pants pulled down last year against Cardiff. They firmly spanked us and that grates me because we deserved it.
"We have to learn from that. We've been in three finals now and we haven't won. We've got to change some of that mentality. The first 20 minutes of that second half on Sunday [against the Blues] was a good stepping stone for us."
Redpath clearly knows that it’s a case of walking before they run in the recovery process and while getting to a final is nothing new for the club, winning them has become a bit of a problem in recent years and beating Northampton would do more for Glaws than merely giving the club better prize money.

What a pity that playing the game at Sixways means the clubs won't earn as much at the gate as they might have if the game was played at a venue with a bigger capacity.
