Their pre-season build-up might have been spoiled by defeat in the final of the Premiership Sevens when it looked as if all they had to do was turn up for the second half to win, but Gloucester have every right to feel confident as the new season draws closer and closer.
Let’s hope they feel the same after their three pre-season friendlies.
The build-up proper begins this weekend, with a Saturday visit to Leinster in Ireland, and that is followed on the next two Saturdays by home games against Cardiff Blues and Doncaster.
All three games will hopefully provide Glaws with differing tests, and while all three are subject to the age-old “results are not as important as performances” rule for friendly games, it would be good to win them all.
Success, after all, breeds success and doing so well in the sevens before losing in sometimes bizarre circumstances in Bath can’t have done the squad any harm.
The big kick-off is just over three weeks away and while coach Nigel Davies says he has been happy with his teams preparations both at home and abroad, there’s no doubt he will feel even better if they can rack up three friendly wins.
The players are making it clear they are buzzing as the countdown continues and there’s no doubt that the fans are just as keen for it all to kick-off … after too many seasons of disappointment, they feel they are due a good one.
And they are dead right.
