Sam Stuart – Postcard from New Zealand 1

By Sam Stuart
March 23 2012

This season we have decided to use some of the Quinssa Academy fundraising money towards sending Sam Stuart down to play in New Zealand. As well as being a fantastic experience for Sam the opportunity to play a club season in a demanding environment is just what Sam needs. Having missed so much of the last two seasons it gives him a great opportunity to get back up to form so that he hits the ground running for Quins next season. Sam is based at Nick Evans old club in North Harbour, East Coast Bays. Sam’s most recent update is below:

“Arrived around 5 o'clock in the evening on Monday 12th March, got picked up by John and Mitch who quickly showed me round the North Shore and where the club was etc. Then got dropped off at 832 Beach Road and met Nick Leader who I’m living with, he’s a friend of the coaches of the seniors 1st and premier side. He’s only just moved in himself but the house is nice with panoramic views of Browns bay and the volcano of Rangitoto, which must be pretty good for a 20 year old to appreciate.
Next day I got inducted into the gym set up which is no Surrey Sports Park but is more than adequate and a bit old school, you are even allowed to change your shoes in the gym (Never allowed under John Dams!) Tuesday evening was straight into fitness which was good as needed a blow out after the long flight. Wednesday was more of the same, just going to the gym and then training with the under 21's in the evening (Senior 1st and Premiers train on Tuesday / Thursday and the U21's train on Monday / Wednesday). I’m doing both at present and training was fitness again on the Thursday night.
The weekend commencing 17th was a pre season camp, probably the first I’ve been too which actually involved bring your own tent! The training on the Saturday was done on the beach and the dunes, this pretty much killed everyone as it lasted for just over 2 hours. After this a bit of bonding was achieved through a two hour court session in which being English wasn’t seen favourably!
Next weekend we have a pre season game this weekend against Taka which I think is Takapuna, this is a chance to prove that I can actually play and deserve a spot in the premier side and that the general Southern Hemisphere view that Northern Hemisphere rugby is rubbish is false!”

Just so you know money for the Quinssa Academy Fund is raised through things like raffles at our events like the Meet the Coaches event which is next week.

We ask for the money to be used by the Academy for things that they would otherwise be unable to do, so it has often been for sending age group teams to rugby tournaments or sending players overseas to train

I hadn't heard about this. What a fantastic idea - well done everyone who got involved.

What a brilliant idea! He is a highly talented player who can only return to Quins even better for the experience. May I also add my congratutation to Quinssa, for a great investment made!(Sm160)

Excellent I might even double the nos of raffle tickets I buy next week - cash well spent and great to get the PCs from Sam - keep the flag flying down there and show them what Quins are made of!
