CRUSHED AT COVENTRY: Wasps 37 - 6 Harlequins

Harlequins, on their first visit to the Ricoh Arena, were comprehensively outplayed by Wasps by whom they were defeated 37 – 6. Lack of discipline that conceded unnecessary penalties, two yellow cards and, with a scrum unable to resist their opponents’ power, two penalty tries, saw Wasps take early command and retain that throughout.

An early penalty allowed Nick Evans to find a good touch from which to launch Quins’ first attack and it was the fly-half himself that broke to only a couple of metres from thee try line, His attempt to offload from out of the tackle came too ;low for jack Clifford who failed to take what should have been a try scoring pass. A penalty at the consequent scrum allowed Wasps to clear the danger and Harlequins had no better scoring chance in the game.

Goode struck three penalties to open a nine point lead before Evans responded with one for Quins. But the Wasps struck as first Miller and Hughes and then Wade broke through to take play deep into Quins’ twenty-two. The ball was moved swiftly left to Varndell who broke through the despairing tackle of Care to score in the corner, When Goode converted from the touchline he opened a lead of 16 – 3. But worse was to follow as almost immediately Wasps launched a further attack from their fast back three, but this time it was the centre, Daly, who sliced through to score. The extras from Goode made the score 23 – 3. The twenty point lead was clearly one that Quins were not going to catch.

Evans missed with one penalty kick and scored with another so that at half time the score was 23 – 6. Worse was to follow as another attack from Wasps ended in Hughes being held up on the line. The following scrum saw Quins concede a penalty. Wasps went for the catch and drive from the lineout. The almost unstoppable drive was illegally pulled down with the referee awarding Wasps a penalty try and showing a yellow card to George Robson.

Harlequins began to weather the storm. They defended staunchly and with greater possession probed the Wasps defences. Robson returned and no further points had been conceded. Wasps , in search of a try bonus point, finally created an attacking lineout with about three minutes remaining. By that time Jack Clifford was in the sin-bin for pulling down a maul set from a catch and drive at a lineout. For the penalty Wasps called for a scrum five metres from the try-line. With Quins down again to fourteen men the Wasps forward drove determinedly and when the scrum collapsed the referee again awarded a penalty try. Wasps had their bonus point and Quins had been soundly beaten.

Makes for horrible reading but a fair assessment of an extremely poor performance from Quins.
