Gordon Ross has been given the honour of leading London Welsh out on Sunday to face his former club Edinburgh Rugby at Murrayfield – a ground which holds some very special memories for the Exiles’ fly half and assistant coach.
He’ll be accompanied by his two nephews, who’ll be assuming mascot duties for the day, ensuring that Sunday will be very much a family occasion for the Ross family.
“Being named captain is nice,” said Ross. “It will be nice to run out with the family there, but more importantly it will be a good day for my little nephews.”
Ross has good reason to have fond memories of Murrayfield. He marked his Scotland debut in 2001 by recording a 23-point haul against Tonga there, eight of his first nine Scotland caps came at Murrayfield, while Murrayfield was also the setting for his first Scotland try, against Italy in 2003.
But for the 25-times capped former Scotland fly half, it’s 2006 that stands out, when he helped Scotland to a famous victory over England.
“Anytime at any level that you beat England is always quite enjoyable. It was a good year,” said Ross.
