The Border Game
By Leipziger
July 16 2010
The shortened game, the Scottish Code, whatever you might call it, Sevens kicks off the English season tonight with the four Premiership sides in and around London locking three-man scrums at the Stoop.

Sevens was first played in 1883 at Melrose, with a tournament organised to raise funds for the club. Just two years later Tynedale won the competition and Percy Park was the first non-Scottish club to host a tournament after the First World War.

The shortened version of our sport still enjoys a good following in the Border region, although sadly the Falcons do not tend to send sides to compete in tournaments there these days. I've never been to one up there but I imagine they are great days out, and it would be even better if one had an emotional interest in the outcome.

There is also a strong international Sevens series that provides a platform for players like our old boys Mathew Tait and Phil Dowson to gain international experience outside of the pressure of the 15-a-side game. Possibly the biggest event on the circuit is the Hong Kong Sevens, which certainly impressed the legendary Bill McLaren and Nigel Starmer-Smith.

For my part, like many (OK, I don't know any others but there must be some) I started watching rugby during the 1995 World Cup, and my first live experience of the sport was a year later at a Sevens tournament at Kingston Park.

Tony Underwood was playing for Newcastle, as I believe was Richard Metcalfe. There was one very tall guy in the home team that were hammered by Northampton in the final anyway.

Since 2004, I have been enjoying the Middlesex Sevens each August, although I am always worried how I will feel if the Falcons are knocked out by 1pm.

Fortunately this hasn't happened recently, with a couple of plate victories and even the trophy itself back in 2007. It might have only been Sevens, but it was a prestigious title for our club and there were more than a few hugs going around the terraces never mind on the pitch.

It is a shame the Festival of Rugby held at KP in 2006 and 2007 didn't continue, it was a nice day out to end the season, with some good players on show who probably wouldn't otherwise get the opportunity to play at a Premiership ground.

And then there were the interesting characters – anyone remember “Sexual Chocolate” playing for that team in pink?

It will be interesting to see how the ten-a-side tournament scheduled for KP at the end of August goes, since Gosforth used to host a similar event every September back in the amateur days.

Overall, I think Sevens is a great day or even weekend out, with plenty of tries, plenty of running and none of the big boots up the middle or re-set scrums that have blighted the full game recently. It does lack the intensity of a tight Premiership game on a cold dark Friday night though, and I couldn't watch it every week.

Good luck to the Falcons playing at Welford Road next Friday though, I will be looking for a bar at which to watch it in Cape Town, and hoping for a reason to visit sunny Bath in early August. We are always competitive in Sevens, so I've every reason to be optimistic!

Newcastle Falcons Poll

Do you think the coaching team of Alan Tait and Paul Moriarty should be replaced?
