Newport Gwent Dragons beat Bath in the last of their pre-season friendlies down at Rodney Parade on Saturday to complete a hat-trick of pre-season wins. Following on from wins over a Gwent Select XV and then away against Penzance and Newlyn away in Cornwall a 20 – 14 win over Bath has left Dragons fans relishing the coming season! The Dragons now move on to their first Celtic League game away to Glasgow on Friday 2nd September with a 7.30pm kick off.
The Dragons were helped to a victory by tries by both Hal Luscombe and Gareth Wyatt, Luscombe setting up Wyatt’s try as well. It was Hal Luscombe who was the star of the show as he cut through the midfield to score the Dragons' first try and then set up Gareth Wyatt to cross over. New full-back Lee Hinton added the extras with two penalties and conversions, while Bath also managed two converted tries through Frikkie Welsh and Matt Stevens, Olly Barkley Andy Dunne adding the conversions.
Half time fun was in the form of a kicking game to win a gas BBQ. Newport Gwent Dragons and the regional side’s main sponsors FloGas teamed up to offer the chance to win a fantastic gas fuelled barbeque in the half time kicking competition.
The Dragons next home match is now some time away, with a home game against Ulster on 24th September with a 5.30pm kick off. Prior to this they have the tough outlook of three away games against Glasgow, then last years’ league winners the Opsreys, and finishing off with a visit to Leinster.
The positive start has perhaps given a view of what the Dragons are capable of this season, but with three away games and a tough one away against the Opsreys, only time will tell.
