So to Sarries at home in the Guiness Premiership. Sarries are one of those teams which I need to approach every game with trepidation. Yes there have been some stunning victories – the Carlos game and the “was it wasn’t it” over matches come to mind – but my gut feel is we often come off second best to the men in black. That was certainly the case earlier in the season at Vicarage Road when we flattered to deceive at times only to end up on the end of a bit of a thumping.
Sarries certainly lived up to the billing as they took the game to Saints in a close encounter that was rarely more than a score apart. Sarries shaded the first half thanks to the boot of Glenda Jackson to a Myler penalty and try from Captain Bruce. The difference being a missed conversion! Saints were never in the lead for that first 40 minutes.
The second half was all more to the liking of the home crowd as Myler slotted over 4 penalties to Glendas solitary place kick. It was thus with seven minutes left that Saints moved 8 points clear. Sarries showed their mettle and refused to give in and in the final minute they managed a drop goal to get the consolation bonus point. This showed the big difference between the teams in experience as Saints’ continued to struggle to close out games.
Brett Sharman making a fairly rare start as Dylan was off gathering splinters on the England bench was in third place with 12.5 % of the votes.
In second was the hometown favourite and diminutive winger paul Diggin. I have rattled on enough about Digger this season and he continued to impress with 22% of the votes.
The winner and now in a clear second place was Roger Wilson with over 26% of the 128 votes cast. Roger is a firm favourite and closing in on Digger.
With this win the forwards are starting to take a firm step ahead of the pretty boysin the backs.
