Question: Who was your MoTM as Saints blew their home record against Newcastle?
By this stage of the season things were shaping up quite nicely for Saints considering this was the first season back in the premiership after a year in National Division 1. We had taken on all comers at the gardens and never been beaten - taking the scalps of Worcester, Wasps, Quins, Bristol, Tigers and Saracens and only having drawn once to Bath. The away performances were a cause for concern but Fortress Franklins was in full swing. Surely Newcastle - a lot of peoples pick for the drop this season - could not change that. Well someone left the drawbridge down and the welcome mat out at the Fortress as Saints did not turn up in the opening 12 minutes and the Falcons happily entered the castle, had a leisurely look around and in the process scored 19 points. So it wasn't so much of hats on wheels as ten gallon hats on wheels!
The key question was how would Saints respond - would they quickly over power the attacking forces or would they run up the white flag? In truth the answer is that once roused they did put up a hearty defence - indeed Newcastle did not score again - BUT whilst they managed to land some blows on the attacking forces they were not sufficient and Newcastle happily returned to the bad lands of "Geordie" with all 4 points and a losing bonus point was no consolation for the men in Green black and Gold.
Not many really - only two players got across the 10% mark making an effort worthy of note. Those were ever present Paul Diggin who garnered 24% of the vote. This is often enough to win and indeed Paul has featured in this so often that he must be leading the individual votes collected!
The winner however with an impressive 37% was a callow youth - well if you can call someone of Courtney's size a youth! This is the second win of the season for Courtney - which is a massive statement of the ability of a player who will only turn 20 this season and plays in a position where you don't normally mature until your mid to late twenties. I can see Courtney going far in the future if he continues like this. It is also of note that he did not take up rugby until quite late so is still working on his core skills.
This win further extends the fat boys lead in the divisional stakes with to a healthy 4 games!
Thanks again to all who voted.
