News: Roger Wilson commits to Saint
By COYSDC
January 29 2010
Wilson, who stands at 6'3" and weighs in at 16st 12lbs, has signed a 2 year extension to his contract at Saints Since signing for the Saints in 2008, Roger has been a firm fixture in the back row of the pack. The quiet destroyer has an influence in every game he plays, and his skills and dogged determination have made him a Gardens favourite.
WILSON STAYING IN THE BLACK, GREEN AND GOLD

Northampton Saints today announced that Roger Wilson has signed an extension to his current contract at the club.

Wilson, 28, has been one of the most consistent performers for the Saints since his arrival at the club. The Irish international number eight has missed out on just 10 games out of the 55 games the team has played since he joined from Ulster in the summer of 2008, and he has been one of the lynchpins of the side that has stormed to the top four of the Guinness Premiership.

In his 45 appearances to date he has scored four tries.

A European Challenge Cup winner in 2009, Wilson has also played in two Churchill Cups for Ireland ‘A' as well as for the Irish national team in 2005, when he became the third generation of his family to win full international honours.

Director of rugby Jim Mallinder says that Wilson is an important player for the Saints squad.

"Roger's qualities are apparent every time he plays," he said. "He provides a focus for the players around him, getting over the gain line and being in the right place at the right time. He has a good relationship with the other back rowers and scrum-halves, and brings confidence to the team.

"At 28 he is in his prime and everyone at the club is delighted that he is staying with us."

Wilson meanwhile says that he is delighted to be staying at Franklin's Gardens for the foreseeable future.

"I'm really settled here and am enjoying my rugby," he said. "It's great to be a part of a club with ambition and a high work ethic. The improvements have been remarkable over the two years I have been here. I came here because I thought we could compete in big competitions and we are. It is great that we have qualified for the quarter finals of the Heineken Cup, which is a first for me.

"I've got lots of respect for the coaches, the time and effort they put in, their expertise and the environment they have created. We have a young squad with quality players who work hard and if we keep improving at the same rate we have been there is no reason why we can't become one of the top teams in Europe."

Good news.
Wilson is one of those players who can easily slip under most spectaros' (and journalists') radar by just getting on with the job without any really flashy stuff. But if you really pay attention to these guys for the full 80 mins you soon realise what work rate they turn in every week - solid in defence, rarely turned over and regularly providing the solid base for the 'stars' to work from.

Great news, and not just because of the go forward he gives us.

If he and Tiny had left it would have been a huge loss in our ball carrying, just Downey of the crash bangers to secure now.

Super dooper a great player wo has been immense for us and getting in there not just good carrying and secure at the back of the scrum but has won some terrific turnover ball at the breakdown. As said above often overlooked and oftem MOM really. Well I am chuffed!

Very good news. Goes about his job in the same quiet, professional, efficient and seemingly effortless way that Richard Hill did.

Most excellent news! That'll be one hell of a back row next season with Dowse, Wood, Courtney and Gray.

Roger is one of the essential ingredients in the mixture for a successful Saints team.

you'd want roger at your side when the chips are down, sure enough.

and skills-wise , you have to admire him for having virtually no weakness to his game.

he and besty have both been great for us, absolutely honour bright the pair of them and i can understand besty leaving ; he's too good a player not to be playing.

Great news - thanks Roger.
